Cell Oil in Nickel Cadmium cells

Post by holmoe »

Hello all, it is slightly OT ..but I want to know what kind of stuff is used as "Cell Oil" in NiCad accumulators. There are several datasheets for NiCad batteries that mention how much from that oil is to be used and that one should use the proper one..but there is no reference what kind of stuff this should be or where you can get it.
In a german electronics forum someone mentioned that paraffine oil or kerosene could be used.... but.. that is a meaning, not a statement.

I have 100Ah NiCad Cells from the french company "Saft" and the datasheet says 30ml per cell. Other manuals tell you that there should be a 5mm layer should be on top of the electrolyte (potassium hydroxide). The oil should prevent the electrolyte to get contamined with carbon dioxide from the air which builds
potassium carbonate (which is inactive as electrolyte) in the cells.

Normally any type of fat or oil is building soap with potassium hydroxide, what isn't really the goal here...

Does someone know what could be used here?

I've refilled the cells with new electrolyte and want to protect it...

TIA,
Holm
