Importing electric cars into Australia

Post by Vintii »

Hello,

I am looking to import Electric light commercial vehicles into NSW and wish to know the following:
Please answer whatever you can by putting the correct number in front of the answer.

1) Under what category of motor vehicle act should these fall in?

2) Do we need any licensing to sell them in private campuses?

3) What is the import duty on these vehicles into NSW?

4) What are the requirements for making them street legal?

5) What is the process to make it street legal?

6) Do we need any insurances?

7) Is there a need for separate product liability insurance?

8) Do we need a VIN (vehicle identification number)

Thank you so much in advance.

Here is the answer to 1)
Government wrote: 4.5. Goods Vehicles

4.5.1. A motor vehicle constructed primarily for the carriage of goods and having at least 4 wheels; or 3 wheels and a ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ exceeding 1.0 tonne.

4.5.2. A vehicle constructed for both the carriage of persons and the carriage of goods shall be considered to be primarily for the carriage of goods if the number of seating positions times 68 kg is less than 50 percent of the difference between the ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ and the ‘Unladen Mass‘.

4.5.3. The equipment and installations carried on certain special-purpose vehicles not designed for the carriage of passengers (crane vehicles, workshop vehicles, publicity vehicles, etc.) are regarded as being equivalent to goods for the purposes of this definition.

4.5.4. A goods vehicle comprising 2 or more non-separable but articulated units shall be considered as a single vehicle.

4.5.5. LIGHT GOODS VEHICLE (NA)

A goods vehicle with a ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ not exceeding 3.5 tonnes.

4.5.6. MEDIUM GOODS VEHICLE (NB)

A goods vehicle with a ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ exceeding 3.5 tonnes but not exceeding 12.0 tonnes.

4.5.7. HEAVY GOODS VEHICLE (NC)

A goods vehicle with a ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ exceeding 12.0 tonnes.
So the short answer is NO but the long answer is YES.

Well depends if you're a gambling man.
Do you have spare Millions of dollars in the event that you get sued for a defective product?

Off road probably not.
On road definitely.

Well duty is federal not state.
It also depends on the vehicle classification.
Typically duty will be 5% but I'm not too sure about the Luxury car tx (LCT).

Well you need approval/license to import them.
https://www.abf.gov.au/importing-export ... or-vehicle

If they are road vehicles you may need a dealer license and they need to be licensed to sell them regardless of the customer.
Off road vehicles you may not need either.
So the short answer is NO but the long answer is YES.

Ohh there are lots
I think there was a thread somewhere that already covered this.
ADR compliances, crash tests and lots of money involved.

Well here I must congratulate you on putting this information out for him.

An intimate knowledge of the vehicle industry, it seems (or maybe just easy research :) :) )

You can't make a horse jump if it doesn't want to eh :)

There are quite a few reasonably priced ev's out in the world.
Unfortunately most are not available in Australia.
And to that most probably wouldn't pass our current regulations without heavy modifications at extra expense.
Initially they look appealing to import until you go into all those extra costs involved.
It is a hard road..
Doable but hard

All that extra cost. You get what you want to pay for. Some people here don't want to pay for what they don't value.

Nov 30, 2017 - The 'base' Sport S starts at $95,100 (+$4,200) with the 177kW SD4 turbo-diesel, and jumps to $97,100 for the 221kW Si4 petrol.

Once again, what a bargain (but can I justify the 'standard' cost. Let's pretend it's an ev and call it an 'extra' cost.) 8-)

The idle horse will go nowhere unless it's a sure bet.

Edit: Added a bracket, oooh, and a random emoticon.

ABC Web News Site today:
How to present content which disrupts someone else's presentations.

Should this be presented here by me? It depends on whether you think it might be happening here, or not.

'A look inside the Topham Guerin boomer meme-industrial complex'
(It's about a New Zealand mob who influence attitudes on social media.)

I liked this bit:

"When the average Facebook user spends just 1.7 seconds on each post, the challenge is to get them to "stop long enough on our content, to process it, to react with it, to interact with it and then share it with their friends". :o
"This is the single most important point: the best social media strategy is water dripping on a stone. You've got to be pushing the same consistent message day-in, day-out," he said."

And:
"Pumping out 'boomer memes'
In Topham Guerin's world, perfection is the enemy of good enough because it's less about the quality of the posts and more about the frequency.
Guerin said the team adopted the 80/20 rule, meaning that if something was 80 per cent good enough, it would just be published, even if it had a small typo or was missing a full stop.

Finally:
To maintain the advantage, the team had to ramp up to some 30 posts a day at the height of the campaign — a benchmark that required them to churn out something new every 20 minutes.
That frequency required the team to resort to using what they called "boomer memes", deliberately lame or cliched visual gags that are poorly designed and may sometimes reference themes in popular culture.
"You're going to slap some Calibri font on a sh,o,tty … reused meme and you're going to publish it and then you get onto the next one, and … that content is going to do better than the thing that your poor graphic designer spent a week on. Sad but true," he said.

I think it is fairly easy, and very beneficial to write jarring inconsistent comments which leave a reader dissatisfied with the visit to that location.

Edit: Yeah, forgot the who-gives-a-share emoticon. I put it on a shorter line. Yeah!! Not enough emotes 8-)

Okay so you seem to have A LOT of time on your hands.
NONE of your rant above had anything to do with importing cars.
Please keep it on topic.
