My type 2 to type 1 5 metre adapter cable arrived today, and I tested it at a location with both type 2 and Tesla destination EVSEs. I was able to plug into the type 2 connector on the EVSE and charge successfully.
Unusually, these type 2 EVSEs had some type 2 to type 2 cables; usually you have to provide your own (my EV is type one, so it doesn't affect me). However, after the charge was complete using just my cable, I decided to try plugging into their cable (so EVSE type 2 to type 2, then my type 2 to type 1 cable in series). But my type 2 socket (if that's the right word) didn't plug completely into their type 2 plug, and it would not charge. I then tried the Tesla destination charger cable, which has what looks like a type 2 plug, but again it didn't fit. I realised that the cords provided were not actually type 2 to type 2, but type 2 to Tesla. [ Edit: I've since realised that this is not true, see a few posts below. ] The Tesla plugs are about 11 mm shorter in the outer plastic part than my type 2 socket. I've read elsewhere about someone taking to his type 2 socket with a hacksaw to make it "Tesla compatible". Ironically, the plug and socket that didn't connect were both the same brand, Duosida. The numbers on the cables differed only by a single letter; mine has a "b" and the other had an "e". The "IEC2" in the part number suggests standard IEC 62196 Type 2, and the letters may indicate a variation in shroud length. In the below, I forgot to take off the soft rubber cover:
My questions are:
* Does everyone with a type 2 to type 1 cable have this problem with Tesla destination EVSEs?
* Did I perhaps order the wrong cable, and should have gotten a Tesla to type 1 cable, which might work with all type 2 EVSEs as well? Tesla destination EVSEs are now quite common, so it would be nice to be able to use them if possible.
* @ev.2549, is your cable modified in some way?
I'm a little loath to hack into a $200 cable. I've seen others for up to $300. I got mine from the link below, but note that I deliberately sought out a 16 A cable, since it's lighter and slightly cheaper, and I don't ever expect to own a type 1 EV with an on-board charger rated at more than 15 A (they'll all be type 2, or something that succeeds type 2 perhaps). The same seller has 32 A cords, and many other variations, as well.
