The study theyre referencing is not available......
At best theyre overestimating the energy required for resource extraction and are hiding their methodology to prevent peer review

Basically they took the worst case scenario for every element of the EV manufacturing and operational life cycle and assumed a 150,000 km complete life (about half that of most ICE vehicles). Not just any EV, but the log range Tesla Model 3, which is about 30 % lossier than say, an Ioniq. They then compared it to one of the most fuel efficient diesels on the planet - The Merc C220. In effect they stretched every possible number out where they could, and found a few cases where the EV came out second best. Then treated that situation as normal.
Pretty ordinary work, really.

Well firstly - where are they going to get Diesel?
Start melting down some Dinosoursuses now...
Secondly - Germany the trend setter in renewable energy but only compare the energy supply from coal ?!?
Not that they are manufacturing the batteries there...
I thought the Gigafactory was covered in solar...

I'm on your side but when I went to download the photo of the gigafactory because it looks very good, the offered file name included walmart

Eh, Elon Musk did get the right idea with the Tesla: on one hand, it's an electric car so it's surfing on the "green" wave, and on the other one, it's a self-driving one, which is quite the trend (I mean, other markets are even studying "how self-driving cars will change the property market", since they're THAT sure that it's going to become the norm); as a result, even if we've heard about Tesla's poor financial performances and all of that jazz, there's still more and more Teslas being sold.
