Doors, mirrors, interior, rims, LH light, windows, dash etc...
But you're right it prob is too much even with all the body parts.

I'd imagine getting all the parts to repair it would be a nightmare.
$5k-10k for parts?!?
Probably still works out cheaper if you have the time.
So the short answer is NO but the long answer is YES.

I think stat write off in NSW means you can never register it again. A bit pricey for a paddock basher.

Ah I thought it said repairable write off.
I still couldn't get my head around trying to fix it then export it.
Is there some other country that it has better value to make it worthwhile exporting?

Its sold now anyway.

For future reference (or for handy trivia) NSW no longer recognises any cars as repairable writeoffs. All writeoffs are statutory there.

Good news from Piman. Some 15 years ago a friend bought an AU Falcon privately in Sydney. Ad said it was "one owner, good condition, low K's bla blah." He didn't use the old Revcheck. It turned out to be a good car longterm, but he was never really able to find any joy in owning it after learning of it's dodgy heritage..

Sounds bizarre to me, lots of vehicles can get written off for basically cosmetic (but expensive) damage, especially as they get older.
Also means the roadworthiness of cars is defined by there insurance cover - eg if it is not insured, it can't get written off, therefore it can be repaired?

Wow we really are moving into a disposable society.

And I couldn't specifically see the "formula" used to determine a write-off in the RTA2013.

As far as I know there is an exception to this rule if you have owned the car for more than 90 days and it would otherwise be considered ‘repairable’. This would allow you to repair a vehicle you own provided it isn’t damaged beyond the criteria outlined in the regs.

That appears to be (almost) true, and I did not know that. According to the link from Richo, it is that you had to have owned it for at 28 days before it was damaged.
So you can't buy a repairable writeoff and repair it yourself, but you can organise the original owner of it to repair it, then buy it off them.

So the good part is that it almost rules out dodgy backyard repairers.

But still allows you to spend your own time and money repairing a classic or modified vehicle you’ve put blood sweat and tears into.

Only works if you were at fault. If another party is at fault and their 3rd party property insurance becomes involved, they can write the car off.

My father used to buy damaged golfs fix them and sell them. This is what I know about the write offs.
In Qld the determination if it was a write off is done by some inspectors at the Auction site. They look at the car and make a judgement if the car has been damaged enough to be a write off and if it is repairable. Some are deemed to be non repairable (flood, extensive damage)
The determination if the damage is extensive enough to be deemed repairable or not is done by the inspector.
If the car is bought as a write off that can be repaired then before you can register the car you need to take it to some office (at the Auction site) where they inspect the car (not sure what they inspect because the car still needs to pass a roadworthy) The inspection costs $400 or so. (If they want to increase the sales all they have to do is just put more write off stickers).
Most of the write offs are just cosmetic damage. My father used to buy them, change the damaged panels/parts (which did not require any panel beating), pay the $400 fee and it could be re-registered and sold again.
When he took the cars for inspection he was asked to show where the parts for the repair came from (my guess is to stop stolen cars being used as parts) then all he had to do is show a record (that was kept by him) showing the vin number of the car that he took the parts from. The idea was that you could see that you did not keep taking the same part out of the same car.
But there was no record or system in place to ensure that the parts did come from a real car.
He did about 10 cars this way. He got 3 or 4 which were for spares which had the parts that he needed still intact.
The cars would sell for $500 at the Auction. He would just change panels and cleanup the car up a bit and fix anything required for a roadworthy mainly brake rotors , tyres and the odd light bulb and get them registered. The cars were quite usable and in reasonable condition.
So all this is just a scam. Some one is just making money out of all this and it is not really protecting any one.
The only thing it stops is a truly unrepairable car being used to rebirth a stolen car. But you could easily take a repairable write off and use it to rebirth a stolen car and still sell the parts of the write off.
