Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
Called my nearest NSW EV dealer this morning. Says they have received no updated info on the Kona EV. Do not have a delivery time, do not have price. And reinterated that delivery may still be much later in year.
Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
Our local dealer is taking deposits, but still no info available- no specs, no price, and no timeline, though suggested they “might” see a few in March.
Another dealer, a little further away, knows nothing, supposedly didn’t even know deposits are being taken.
Pretty dismal show all round!
Cheers

In Europe they are fitting the standard ICE towbars to the EV version and there's pics floating around to show it.
Here not so much...

Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
Electric cars are such a wonderful product to sell. Even without doing any advertising no price no specs and customers are already putting deposits for something they haven't seen and don't even know the price of.
Why are car manufacturers not making more EVs?

Based on what others are saying, a few reasons I've bumped into:Why are car manufacturers not making more EVs?
- insufficient capacity in the supply chain for batteries
- slowing the stampede
- stranded assets

And one of the biggest reasons of the lot:
4. Loss of a valuable income stream from servicing and spare parts sales.

Not entirely true if they have it their way.
I looked at a new leaf a few years back and when I questioned the Nissan dealer about servicing they said it's about the same size as a pulsar so servicing should be the same "capped price" at $250 a year.... Plus supplementary services if I wanted them at 6 months.
I had no words to respond to that statement

Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
Re servicing, it's trivially easy to reset the servicing counter yourself. Also, it's nearly all inspection items, out until 100k km. The only consumables are the cabin aircon air filter, which don't really need changing as often as you would imagine.
You can reasonably do most of it yourself.

Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
Inspection items would be to catch issues like the Outlander phev battery plug being knocked out. As an example, though the Outlander with an ice would actually need servicing anyway
Having said that, I can't think of any failures that could come back to lack of servicing, when the service schedule basically shows none up to 100k km.

Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
The interesting thing for the Australian market will be making them into toads, vehicles that can be towed behind a motorhome. An ignored market to date, to their peril, the Australian population of baby boomers is huge and they are now at retiring age. The number that are hitting the road to do that "big trip" is mind boggling.
Think of the market potential for an EV that could be towed behind the motorhome, have 4WD capability for that trip into the bush or the sand dunes and onto the beach, can be refuelled by the motorhome solar or refuelled at a fast charger and driven back to supplement the motorhomes house battery power, ultra reliable, not have the problem of accidentally being left in gear and revving the ICE motor till it exploded taking the gearbox with it ...... then the servicing cost comparison and a vehicle that will not depreciate in value the way an ICE vehicle will over the next 5 yrs ....... why are the manufacturers and dealers so blinded with tunnel vision

Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
I am working on it. Electric Pajero.
Instead of towing the EV how about the EV towing the caravan. The caravan would have a 100kwh battery with a 6kw solar array. You park the caravan open the solar panels and leave it charging while you go out and explore on the EV. Range will be unlimited if you are patient. All you need is food and water.

Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
a 6kW solar array, that is one very big caravan, I doubt you would be towing that with a Pajero, the tail would wag the dog.
We have a Hino RB145A and I just fitted 1.62kW of solar to the roof, it is nose to tail and side to side. we could maybe squeeze another panel on if we over hung the front a bit and well over the rear to provide a solar roof for the air con hanging off the back
The 1620w of solar feeds a 180Ah 24v lithium battery, that's a 4.3kWh battery on a good day, they are well over 5 yrs old and have had a very hard life of abuse so they are not at their best performance levels.
This still provides enough stored power to run an air fryer, a coffee pod machine, a toaster, an electric jug, a 300 ltr approx. household 240vac fridge, pre inverter technology, the air con on the eccon setting all night, phone chargers, a CAPA machine and the dryer for my hearing aids, all before the sun comes up the next day. Why would anyone need a 100kWh battery?
We will upgrade our battery capacity, but mainly to run a bigger inverter, the 2500w inverter gets stretched to its limits every so often, so an upgrade to a 4kW unit with an over load of 8kW capacity will do the job nicely, but 100kWh battery? Maybe a 400Ah x 24v or 16.5kWh would be heaps.

Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
The 100kwh is to get more range out of the towing vehicle.
To get 6kw solar you need to have an awning on each side of the caravan.
A large caravan is about 6x2m about 12m2. At 170w per m2 for solar panels that is 2kw. Then an awning on each side adds up to a total of about 6kw. You park the caravan and open the awnings and charge the 100kwh battery in the caravan and the 70kwh in the car for a total of 170kwh. Should take about 8 days to charge. After that you do another 2 or 300 kms a repeat until you get to where you want to go. This is assuming you do Not stop at a town to recharge.
The pajero should be able to tow 3000kg.

Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
I have ordered one...Or perhaps preordered one..
The first batch of cars for WA will hit the wharf this month according to the dealer. With a little snooping that means the 19th Feb.
$50K for the Elite spec and $55k for the Premium/Highlander spec plus ORC in WA.

I have also preordered in NSW, from Crawfords Brookvale. They had a showing on Friday. Though I wasn't in attendance. Attached some images sent by the dealer of their demonstrator vehicle.
We will see.
They still don't have price or colours, available. They have told me some time in March 30 vehicles will be available. We will see.

Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
This car has been "doing the rounds" according to others. It's not new stock for sale.
But I'm liking the lighter interior. Not sure what's on the boat though..
