Tyres??

Post by bindi »

Hey guys - my front i-miev tyre is flat! They were LONG overdue to get replaced anyway - was just putting it off.

I know this has been discussed before and I looked up the threads but most of what was written went way over my head :)

Just looking for safe (and if possible affordable) tyres as I mainly use the car for ferrying the two kids around :))

So what do I ask for - I am guessing the i-miev wont be in the databases of the tyre companies (it hasn't been in the databases for most stuff I have tried to do with it - get insurance, seat covers etc)?? So are my options Dunlop vs Continental?

I am located on the Gold Coast.

What does the 145 and 155 mean? I need to get them all replaced. Should I just get the same tyres on the front and the back??

original tyres were
fronts Dunlop Enasave 2030 145/65 R15
rears Dunlop Enasave 2030 175/55 R15

145 is the tyre width in mm
acmotor and I decided to go with wider fronts.

front and rears are different widths

others might be able to advise on your last question

Having the same tyres on the front and back is more of a personal choice than a safety issue.

Having the same tyres on each axle is a safety issue though ie. make sure you have matching tyres on front left and front right, and make sure you have matching tyres on the rear left and rear right.

Ah cool. So you have 155 on the front now and 175 on the back? I am guessing you are happier with the change still?

THANK YOU so much for your help!!! I obviously have no idea when it comes to tyres and I have the feeling that the tyre places won't know the i-miev well and I didn't want to be misguided. :))))

Mitsubishi prolly wanted to keep it same as smart cars
I've seen smarts with 155 in front too.

BMW i3 has 155 front 175 back but 19 inch.

Screw in right rear.
Getting fixed at subiaco tyres; Wayne and Tabatha Akers.
They are continental branded business.
Had a Range Rover in for its tyres.

Being a private business they can stay open till the job is done.

They've had teslas and Priuses in for tyre repairs

There are very good reasons why the front is narrower than the rear but I am happy with the Continental 155 wide rather than hard to find 145. Also much more stable feel. Rear motor vehicles frequently have wider rear tyres. It is to do with avoiding oversteer with more weight at the rear.

I think my motorbike has a 120 on the front and 175 on the rear, makes the i-MiEV's look quite balanced.

I wanted to fit toyo tires on my iMiev but there's no available size so I ended up getting the Conti Eco 3. Good grip, and my car feels much more planted. There's a bit of road noise though.

Your prices sounded great, where was it from?
I just got a quote from Jax in NSW(Erina) -
Front Continental eco 3 155/60 15 $139
Rear Continental eco 3 C175/55 15 $165

The original Dunlops on the front only lasted 20Kkm, and the Conti's on the front have lasted 40Kkm. Rear are the original Dunlops which have done 60Kkm. I'm used to 80K-120Kkm from Cooper HT SUV tyres so the iMiEV choices look pretty poor, however SUV tyres are > $250 ea so I guess it ends up being about the same per km.

Were you happy with the wear of the Kumho g4qber (or anyone else who's had them on for a while)?

I've had another quote -
155-60R15
Kumho KH11 - $119
Nankang AS-1 - $113

175/55R15
Kumho KH11 - $149
Nankang AS-1 - $139

go continental, kumhos sounded initially like a boat and had studs protruding

continentals all round now
bob jane joondalup
pricing was odd, even Fred agreed; allegedly price subject to availability
155s = $145
175s = $123

they also put nitrogen into tyres as part of their long life tyre plan
but didn't use green caps, had to go back next day to get green tyre caps

tyre history:
original dunlops
changed to kumhos all round, sounded like a boat
fronts changed to contis
all contis now - 101985km

Yeah! I always put the 80% grade nitrogen into my tyres. Think about it. Nitrogen at 80% is what the outside of the tyre is exposed to! If there is any useful benefit it might come from the filling gas being dry. I suspect plain dry air would be as good.
