Post by choirguy »

recently had 30,000km service - thought $480 was a bit steep, as there a fewer bits in an electric car than similar petrol car.
the cost was justified on the basis of service deptment needing to check the same number of items as an ICE as well as fully discharging the traction battery??
What has been other owners experience pls.

Booked in for 60,000km /36 month service next week (actually 27,000km, 60 months old). Which I think is the same service as you, needs leaving overnight. Quoted $367 at Paceway Mitsubishi WA. Doesn't seem too bad to me considering it includes the major battery analysis. I think it is less if just doing the brakes/fluid checks at the minor service.

The thing is MMAU don't warrant the battery for capacity, only defects. There is no tangible reason why they would need to do a full cycle with the battery pack. I do this as a matter of course from time to time.

Personally I haven't ever and will not in the future take my Imiev (2012) to be serviced. To date most likely the result is a good $1000 or so in my pocket with no ill effects on the car.

Take a look at the service book that came with your car and see what needs doing ...not much and not often.

If I wasn't mechanically minded and willing to do it myself every now and then. I would suggest perhaps once a year to get your local mechanic (or some one you trust with some Auto mechanical experience ) to throw it up on the hoist and check the things listed on the service manual. As most of it is just visual checks. On suspension and drive line components to see if they are loose or damaged.

There are a few service items brake fluid every few years and reduction drive fluid every 100,000km+ (from memory) both simple inexpensive things that don't come up often.

Kurt

I thought I'd go along with this one since ours is 5 years old, but we have a 5 year warranty, and it has not had this service done before. I guess they are unlikely to really come up with anything interesting. Not sure if this one includes brake fluid.

I think they said the normal annual service is only $150, so not likely to be sufficient savings taking it elsewhere to bother on that. I should check the service manual though, as Paceway were claiming it should have 6 month service intervals and I had thought the recommendation was 12 months. Google suggests the fixed price servicing offered with 2012 models was annual.

Well after arranging to leave the i-MiEV for 2 days+ after dropping it off I got a phone call saying actually it doesn't need the major service, only a minor one.
So it cost $200 and I got it back the same day with new washer fluid. Would be nice if they could have figured it out when I questioned it needing a major service beforehand. They are calling it a 50,000km service though it has actually done 27,000, and should theoretically be onto the 100,000km/60 month service if doing it by the calendar.

They also gave me an AHG 4c/L fuel discount card, that'll be useful for the i-MiEV! I guess most i-MiEV owners would have an ICE car as well.

So apart from new washer fluid do you know what else they did for your $200? When I asked it was like pulling teeth getting information out of the dealer

So why keep taking the car to them and handing over good money for nothing?

Mostly a whole bunch of checks.
I tried to confirm whether the brake fluid had actually been changed at the previous service as the 40,000km was stamped for that which is supposed to include a fluid change, but they said that was before Paceway was sold to AHG group and they don't have the records. They did say the fluid was tested.
attached should be the list of what they say they did.

It gets worse. Took the i-MiEV in to Paceway for the factory recalls this week and thought I would get a service done at the same time. Should have got a quote first, I was charged $650 for the 40,000km service (interesting as they claimed the previous service was the 50,000km one, actual odometer reading is 35,000).
They did change the brake fluid and air/pollen filter, but mostly $400 labour for checking things.

They didn't seem to have done the traction battery check. Also didn't do half the recalls as they found there was an additional recall on the dc-dc converter which they need to do first, so it is booked in for another 2 days when the parts arrive.

Paceway mitsubishi have the file marked "warranty expired" which is inconsistent with the 5 year warranty I was promised when sold it (Paceway is under new ownership since then).

I am inclined to pursue other servicing options in future.

change the oil in the diff (auto trans fluid ATFII 750ml) if not already done   .25hr

it is arguable, but change the brake fluid every 2 years, if not already done    .5hr

inspect the brake pads/rotors/drums.... will be less than 5% wear if like mine and really don't require any attention as they are not used
.5hr

check the brake fluid and coolant levels
.1hr

top up the windscreen washer bottle
.1hr or is that 4.5hr Image

check the 12V aux battery water level (visual levels) why do SG ? probably just contaminate and spill acid.
.1hr

replace windscreen wiper blade if you really have to
.1hr

under vehicle inspection wobble,shake,wipe .25hr

aircond and road test... you already know those.

1.65hr and $20 ATF

simply not worth $620

What are they doing for $620?

Edit: just what I was thinking Acmotor.

at $0.25 kwh that $620 gets you 2480kwh of grid power. Or roughly 19,000km of driving in the ImievImage

I got 4 new tires for my Imiev a few weeks ago Maxxis MA-P1's in stock size non low RR. Other than that I haven't touched the car. Will do the reduction drive oil most likely next year.

Can't see any reason doing this test when:

1) Your car is now out of warranty.
2) The results don't mean anything especially to Mitsubishi. Refer to point 1

I would say any reputable mechanic would be more that capable of inspecting the drivline, brakes, suspension and steering along with any fluid changes needed.

Learn to do it yourself Joseph - bleeding brake fluid is probably the most technical job, and while it's a two person task, it's very straightforward.

I think my father had his serviced at EV shop in Balcatta.

http://www.evshop.com.au/service.html

Nice to have someone who appreciates electric cars do it, but most of the regular maintenance is non-drive related.
