It is interesting. I hope it's real, and that it's real and affordable. I really do want lots of EV's on the road. We'd just have to move over a bit If it was real and affordable, it would force the other companies to change their business models. I hope it's real.

What becomes very clear once you start playing around with various lithium batterys. Although some are better than others is both size and weight for a given capacity. We are not talking 300% Smaller - lighter. We are talking perhaps 30% between the worst and the best of lithium cells.
That in mind and given the Nissan leaf we know now doesn't have the least energy dense lithium cells in it. So There is perhaps only room for 10 - 20% at the most to be gained in capacity from better chemistry's. So given the Nissan leaf now has a real world range of about 140km to get 350% more range would require 350% more weight and volume in batterys.
It just isn't going to happen. The only reason the Tesla model S has a 400km range is because it Uses one of the best cells for energy density and has 85kwh of them. Because it's already a BIG car with the majority of the car being the battery pack its self due to its design that the leaf dosn't share.
I would say the all metal chassis Nissan leaf would be lucky to fit 30kwh of battery in after upgrading the chemistry to the best there is. Perhaps 35kwh if body modifications where made to fit more volume of cells. To me 200 - 250km would be the max practical range the chassis could hold and retain it's functionality and even that's questionable.

The current model Leaf has a range of 225km on the Japanese test cycle so a 48kwh version could get close to double that figure. A 48kwh Leaf would have a real world range of 250km at 100kph which would be great if they don't cost too much.

48kwh, Doubling the capacity of the battery it's going to have to be a totally new car (as in a bigger car) or a totally redesigned car to fit that in.
Yes 250km real world range sounds more like it. Not that silly number on the sticker they achieve with a 80kph tail wind.

I think they hinted that a 30 kWh battery would fit into the current shell of the 24 kWh as there had been improvements in the density (like the Chevy Volt 2).

Battery tech is improving at the moment, it seems to be in a cycle of significant increase right now. The Leaf in the video certainly has a different treatment to the front styling, so it could be that the car is real but not ready for prime time.
For example, maybe the battery is unstable in some ways, ie: maybe it can only recharge 300 times rather than the required 3000+, or maybe it is not tolerant to extremes in heat. Nissan could well have a chemistry that gives 500Km right now but are still tweaking it to be reliable.
Remember, Nissan is one of the few manufacturers to build their own batteries, so who knows what they have waiting in the wings.

3648, 18650 lithium ion batteries will fit into a 2012 Leaf battery Pack. That equals 47-55 Kw (3600ma-3700ma) 100% charge @ 0.11kw/km = 500Km

I don't think it is the front. Look underneath. It only has less than half the ground clearance because of the big black extended battery that hangs under it.
