front tyres have more width and not like a 2cv or a VW beetle.
and original prius gen 3 prius
with their narrow tyres
seems that narrow tyres are good for snow tho'
normal like this
rinspeed imiev
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAcl5l7OhiU
this was one thing that put me off the prius.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2010- ... 1-2011.jpg
another trick to do with the prius and camry hybrid is this.
1. come to dead stop
2. flick it into Neutral
engine will run 4 ever.
work around
1. come to dead stop
2. wait for engine to cut out
3. flick into neutral
engine will be inactive.

Same profile as acmotor
Now the imiev sounds like a boat
This is similar to 4wd tyre noise on freeways
The new tyres make the imiev look more normal
4WD noise? Can't be same profile as mine then.
What about cross winds ?
Re energy consumption...... I'm trying to see a difference from logs but I haven't reported back yet because I can't see any difference.

not quite 4WD, but similar sound at 80kmh+ speeds
fairly low rumble for us with sensitive ears.
definitely different from previous tyres.
yesterday went to barbagallo track, 100dB even from 50m away.
won't be going back there soon. if the V8s are running.
luckily I have my earplugs with me all the time.
one of the reasons I don't go to movies too; too loud.
lots of power sockets
32A, 20A, 15A, 10A
would be great to hold a "fun drive" day one day with WAEVs. ooh that could be a cool acronym.
Wave when you see a WAEV.
will post pics of power points. I couldn't stop drooling.

It's hard to predict how a tyre will sound or ride just by looking at it. Not my Imiev but a example from my other car 4wd ute. I just had new tyres fitted last week. The original factory tyres that were at the end of there life at 50,000km Bridgestone 245,70,16 all terrain so not very aggressive tread pattern. There was some noise from them at 110kmh but usually drowned out by the wind noise and the handling was always avarage.
I had 255,70, 16 so slightly larger dia and width tyre fitted , maxxis brand also a all terrain tread pattern but much more aggressive and deeper tread almost 1/2 way between a all terrain and a light mud tyre. I was expecting some gain in noise for sure. To my surprise they are way quieter than the original tyres on the blacktop and the dirt and handling is significantly more sharp .
I went through a lot of tyres over the years in my old civic. Picking a new set was always a gamble that didn't always pay off. Some tread patterns are just made to look good (sounds crazy but it's true) A lot of people pick a tyres based on what looks good to them in the showroom. I made that mistake once. When you get on to a tyre you like 2 or 3 years later they didn't make it anymore or changed the tread pattern or country of manufacture so it was a gamble again

Keep in mind that g4qber has been thrashing his i around the race track.
I have 62,000 km up on my rears and they look good for another 20,000. Probably replace them before next winter.
I replaced the fronts with 155 wide last year not because they were worn out but to improve the crosswind stability.
I can assure you the difference is outstanding ! .... And I can't see any consumption change.

That's good to know ACmotor that kind of lifespan sounds good to me. I will give the same fronts a go when I wear my fronts out.
Yes hitting the corners hard on a track will wear things out a lot faster. Along with the road base in your local area. Some of the reads in the NT are shockers for abrasion.
I have always wondered about the theory about tyres wearing faster in wet conditions. I guess they are using the idea that rubber cuts easier when lubricated or something like that.
It could just be me but it always feels like I see more wear over the wet season. That's going off cars with higher performance tyres that only get 20 - 30k so wear is easier to follow. (no I don't go around spinning the wheel in the wet
)

one can't thrash with only 47kw of power. if boosted to 80kw now we're talking burning rubber or even 60 kw would be interesting.
seems that this is possible, only that one would need a new power controller.
also better rims and beefier front discs and fatter tyres and a roll cage and racing stripes.

What I want to know is why you bother to take it on a track.
Or are you racing other imiev's. Or some kind of handicap system?

For the fun of it.
I would take the volt but it is not fully electric doesn't have a fire extinguisher and am getting rid of it
It's my mid life crisis.
Imiev is also rear wheel drive.

The time had come....
I ordered 2 x continental ecocontac3 in 155x60 R15 from BoB Jane and had them F&B for $130 ea. ...
Observations....
Firstly, a detectable change in steering weight (heavier). But very stable. bga and g4qber have both driven my i with these new rim wraps and noticed the change.
A very different sound on the road. Cat's eyes for instance are a dull sound rather than the sharp one of the old front 2030's.
A very plesant tracking and loss of the shopping trolley front wheels feel of the 2030's.
...and the big plus, as Kurt flagged, the iMiEV cross wind dance has gone ! I drove 80km in a blustery cross wind yesterday and had braced myself for the dance... but it didn't happen. Was it that simple ? some decent fronts ? I had blamed the iMiEV aerodynamics of a block of flats for the dance.
OK, so there may be some downside in range (surely it can't all be good) but they are still LRR tyres....
I noticed a bulge in the side wall of one of the front tyres. I had a vague memory of hitting a pothole hard. Also, the tread was getting low. I got a pair of the same Continental tyres 10mm wider. I agree with each of the changes mentioned above. It feels more solid on the road and less noise, duller sound hitting road buttons etc. Admittedly the tyre place said the alignment was out which might have been the pothole and that might have effected the handling, but I think the new tyres are better.
