Without doing anything special, our normal driving around Canberra - hilly, summer, mostly 80-90kph roads, the guessometer tends to show around 110km on the next full charge.

That article is one of the best EV summaries I have seen. It's difficult to explain to people that the EV does not have to replace every ICE powered car on the road. Their eyes usually glaze over after a minute or two. I'll try pointing people at this article.

Agree. Excellent article on the real world.

Considering how many times a year people actually get away from work for a break, the hire option makes a lot of sense. Especially if you drive a 4WD

After owning many 4WD over the years, the cost of everything related to a 4WD is crazy when you may only go truly "off road" once or twice a year at best.

Most roads nowadays are sealed anyway...

And my iMiEV did just fine on its first excursion out to the countryside visiting a friend at the end of several km of single lane, unsealed, loose gravel, farm track. I just took it easy as I would in any other 2WD car on a dirt road.

The one downside to the flat state, the wind.

Gotta get up early for your best bet to beat the head winds heading south.

I'm finding the biggest contributor that can change consumption (range) is how much stop and go I run into. On Friday I consumed more energy over my 104 km trip taking the back roads than I do taking the freeway at 100kph.I got every single red light and train crossing possable. Every time you need to shift that 1200kg back up to 60-80kph you suck a big chunk of energy.

Driving around in the hinterland I get fantastic range as I never have to stop (no traffic lights)

103.9km for this test drive, until the flat bed truck arrived.

agreed about stop/go. I did the stop/go shuffle on the Greenmount hill and ran out at 106.5km. the Easterly headwind also did not help.
http://www.recargo.com/sites/10369

the other weekend I got back on the horse and made it to Northam 111.4km, but travelling at 70kmh, also up Greenmount Hill without stop/go traffic and the westerly might have helped too.

She most likely got into the imiev not fully charged and just trusted what was on the RR guage.

I regularly do over 100km drives in mixed conditions with 20 - 35% SOC remaining.

Though at some point you just have to say why push the limits all the time it can't be good for the battery turtling it all the time or the image of ev's becoming stranded.

Perhaps WA just has freeways everywhere and no backroads. So other than the inner city you have to drive at 110kph and near on 100km distance to get anywhere?

Particularly so when the 4WD is a four tonne behemoth used almost exclusively to ferry a couple of yard apes to and from school & to pickup milk / bread from the supermarket. On the other hand a Suzuki Sierra doesn't make too much of a dint in the budget.

Who is driving a 4 ton 4wd in AU?

4000kg we are talking F450 truck with a 6.7lt 400hp v8 and all the goodies 400Ah dual batteries 180lt tank. Thats rare sight in AU getting milk.

Image

Typically 1/2 that weight at around 2 ton or so where most 4wd in AU sit some of the larger fully kitted out landcruisers and the like can be pushing 2.7 ton.

I agree that a little sierra is a capable off road machine especially for local weekend fun. Not so good on long trips just due to carrying capacity and or towing capacity.

I will still say that my 2.2ton 3lt 4wd would consume less fuel (although diesel) than a sierra. Though they are available as a diesel in other countries and I bet thats frugal.

Fourbys really don't belong on highways, mind you I'd be quite happy if I never saw a highway again. Too many petrol-head land speed record types all frantically searching for a flash for cash unit to which they can pay their speeding taxes. I wouldn't even have a Suzuki if it wasn't needed for farming interests and it fulfils that requirement admirably. The only things a Toyota would do better is chew up the ground. For what its worth, there is no sense in converting the Suzuki to electric as it doesn't do sufficient kilometers to make the exercise worth the effort.

They must have been keeping a huge safety margin (and they mentioned that)

Range is a silly question because it could be anything from 50km to 200km depending on conditions.

Driving carefully on my regular trip up the coast I do 80km on 50% SOC. With 3 people in the car and lights on. As another example driving very aggressively 100% throttle everywhere! and through the very steep hills I have used 50% SOC in just 40km.

On the way home I do 104km distance on 65% of my capacity via the freeway with AC on and 3 people in the car.

There is so much variation. That said driving at the posted speed limits and following the normal traffic speed (or another example hand some one the keys and just say drive me without telling them it's electric). I find I can drive 100km distance in any direction from home I can achieve with at least 20% SOC remaining so I call my range a safe 100km.

"The automatic transmission shifts very smoothly"

Looks like they were thinking it was a Automatic Image Its a direct drive single speed.

"the car gave an autonomy of 95 km"
From that I also feel they were using the RR gauge as a guide to their range not the battery SOC meter on the left.

They were completely new to the car. While there impression are important there advice on it's range and spec (transmission) is based on very little experience or knowledge of the car.

Now I have had the chance to drive my partner's 2012 for a few days, and she had my 2010 for a couple of weeks while hers was waiting for tyres, we have both noticed that the controller on the 2012 is much better, regen is much more aggressive in B mode (B on my 2010 is hardly any more regen than D on her 2012...while D on mine is not much more than C on hers. ) and the range that she gets is much better driving hers than mine.
She was struggling to do things in mine that she would have done with plenty of leftover range in hers.
I can drive mine almost as far as she can drive hers, but I tend to hypermile unless I am doing a short trip with a full charge. I'd really like to see just how far I can get hers on a single charge.....
2012 definitely has a better range than 2010.
I was wondering why I couldn't get the kinds of distances some of you guys are getting routinely, I didn't think it was my driving style....
Best I have done was 117km and that was running it to turtle on mostly flat and averaging 70kmh.

I didn't think it would be your driving style considering your day job.

Your in the perfect situation to compare the differences. Having two Imievs in the one family.

Perhaps you could try charging them both until the green light comes on for 100% SOC and then head out on a trip. Roughly divide up the passenger (kids) to get a equal weight in each car. Then just follow one another and see when the first person reaches 8 bars 50% SOC. It Could be interesting.

Regarding the range difference from 2012 - 2010 Imeiv. I bumped into another Imiev owner who lives locally in the sunshine coast hinterland. She has a silver 2010 model and she was very surprised when I told her we drive ours regularly with 3 people in it from Brisbane to Maleny 94.5km (and a big climb into the range) where she lived on just one charge. I didn't tell her I actually drive a further 10km extra than that to my house for a total of 104km with 20% SOC remaining
She said " they must have made some improvements to range as we wouldn't consider that we only use it local" She listed off a few towns that were 20 - 35km away. 40 - 70km round trips.

I will get her to use my power meter soon and log her charges...
We might be doing a few two car trips after December.....the imiev is only a four seater and from December we're going to need an extra seat.....
Perhaps when the ex fleet Leafs become available we will trade my 2010 for one....

was doing some elektrobay charge bollard research with the various 2010 imievs at paceway this week

2 bars = 13 km left, by extrapolation x8 to 16 bars = 104km, was flashing
4 bars = 30km left, 120km
