Hi all,

Is there anyone in Perth who would be happy to allow me to use their MIG welder for free or in exchange for a carton of beer etc?

Can't justify buying a welder myself but have around 20 minutes of welding to do.

Cheers,

James

Hey James,
You're welcome to come and use my arc welder all you like, and it's free. Are you welding 1.6 mm steel? I have welded that quite successfully with the old buzz box, but MIG would do a nicer job.

What metal are you welding? I've got a little Transmig 135 but currently am only running gasless wire.

Hey Faz, you still at the Uni? You should have access to all sorts of cool stuff there Image

Not anymore Chris.
Sadly no more access to the $90,000 laser welder. :(

Hi Chris and Faz,

Thanks for the offers, I am just trying to weld some 1.6mm wall thickness SHS together for a small eV Challenge drivetrain and some 6mm plate on for the dropouts. I've never used Arc before so before MIG but if you gave me a quick lesson I'm sure I'd pick it up pretty quick Chris.

Sounds good. Name a date and we'll have a weld-a-thon. I would like to try MIG at some point...

1.6 is doable even with 2.5mm rods, but have a practice on some scrap offcuts first!

I recently did some 1.6 mm welding on 2.5 mm rods (2 mm rods were hopeless) and it came out alright. You have to stop and re-start quite a bit though to prevent from blowing through.

Hi Chris,

Thanks so much, I'm free pretty much anyday so whenever you're available :)

Those welds look pretty good to me, my self taught MIG welds at the beginning were pretty shocking.

Cheers,

James
