EP-1000 controllers: scam!

Post by coulomb » Tue, 12 Mar 2013, 18:58

At a Brisbane AEVA meeting a few months ago, member unheardofinstruments brought in an EP-1000 controller. He knew it was a low-end controller, and wanted to know how to "beef it up" to make it more robust. I remember thinking that the controller was very amateurishly made: perforated board, what looked like a light dimmer circuit, long leads on the main capacitor, that sort of thing.

I've now read that as well as being poorly made, they are in fact dangerous. Here is a good summary post of many posts that document this "controller":

http://www.diyelectriccar.com/forums/sh ... post346477

In short: one builder had the controller fail shorted and was saved only by the big red switch; several customers have made warranty claims, and promised gear is never delivered. The design is extremely dubious; it may not even have a free-wheel diode. The claims are literally unbelievable, e.g. that it adapts automatically to any type of DC motor. There are no user settings (it is claimed, because everything you might want to configure is done automatically).

Shorted DC controllers are not fun. As mentioned in one post: "No matter what you think, brakes will not stop a series wound motor directly shorted into a battery pack. The slower the motor goes the more the torque grows."

If you want the details, you'll have to wade through the many links that can be found from the above thread, or from the second post of this thread:

http://www.diyelectriccar.com/forums/sh ... 84073.html

My strong advice to anyone considering buying this controller, or the EP-Junior, is to forget it. The price is low, but that's because it's not a real EV motor controller. The low price is in no way a compensation for the danger.

I'll mention these keywords, so that searchers can readily find this thread, and be warned of the danger:
Paul Zigouras ("manufacturer")
EPC and EP-1000 (brand and model number)
Enterprise Power Conversion (what EPC stands for)
EP-Junior (an even cheaper model)
EP-2000 From the web page: "For High Performance Electric Vehicles and Heavy-Duty Industrial Applications" (there is little reason to believe that this model will be appreciably safer)
http://epc-corporation.com, the web site selling these controllers and other gear
(not to be confused with http://epc-co.com, apparently a real company).

So now you step on the clutch and have motor guts flying out everywhere as it rapidly spools up to 50k rpm :(
