CNC cut body

Post by Canberra32 »

Well guys a bout of good fortune has been thrust upon me and I'm in a generous mood :)

I just acquired a 3D CNC router that can mill 3D body sections from your 3D cad files :)

So I suggest a Aeva member competition :) over the next two months.

Submit your pics of your fancy designs and I will pic one to machine a foam plug for cost of foam only :)

Be it full car size or tiny trike the best one becomes the first one :)

Be aware that something the size of the car I'm milling takes nearly 6days to machine so as you can imagine the prize is well worth it :)

Any takers?

I bought it to do my car :)
At the moment it will do 2400x1200x200 but I will be adding some extra to the Z axis soon so can do up to 600.
So car gets done in sections :)

Still hunting down the milling arm for a full 6x3x2 5axis :)

Damn. I'm in Wollongong, but haven't joined AEVA yet as the only service the association offers that I can actually use is this forum (all the Sydney branch stuff is too far away for me to attend). Oh well, hopefully you get some interesting designs.

Mad! I'll see what I can come up with. Would love to make something CR-Z/CR-X/Delta E-4/VW Scirroco shaped. RWD, skateboard-battery, CFRP/GFRP shell.

The guy who designed the body for what was going to be the UOW entry in to the world solar challenge came up with a really cool design. I wonder if I could get him in on this as well. He did all the aero analysis and it was super slick.

Inspiration for anyone else putting in a design: Delta E-4

Canberra32 i dont think you understand the distinction you have made

when someone asks

"Open to AEVA members only, or all forum members?"

that is 2 different category's there

AEVA members

and

AEVA forum members

a AEVA member can be a AEVA forum member

but

AEVA forum members may not be a AEVA members depends if that have payed membership fees

Yeah BigMouse, you better pay that $40 fee or else... we'll have to politely ask you again to pay that fee Image

I would happily pay it if I knew how membership would benefit me. I just spent some time browsing the AEVA home page and couldn't find any details.

Also, I'm a student, so it's only $20 anyway. Still, I'd like to know what I'm getting for that $20 before I lay it down. </HIJACK>

That was kinda what I was getting at Image But yeah the funds help branches host events which usually cost money. The Perth branch requests funds each year to host public events such as the upcoming Electrikhana. If not for paying members we wouldn't be able to host such things. However, if members don't get active and involved, nothing happens. When nothing happens, the punters are absolutely right to ask, why join? Perception of value is a big problem.

So if you are going to get an awesome foam plug made for a sweet ground up car build, you better become a member so we can all gawk at it during the next AGM Image

It's an awesome offer, but very few people have the time, money, and/or space to utilize it. The foam plug isn't the hardest part about building a vehicle from the ground-up. I've got plenty of ideas about what my ideal personal commuter would look like, and I could design the plug today from that, but my garage is already occupied with my BMW, my money is already allocated to converting that to an EV, and my time is already allocated to debugging my motor controller.

But the plug can be the final.
Simply lay the layers over it in epoxy then turn it over and melt the foam out with thinners.
I'm going to do that with a maybach I found

Yeah, I understand how the foam plug can be used. We were planning on building our solar racer that way before the project was scrapped. I'd actually have the foam cut with the cabin already in place, so it'd be a series of moderately thick rings. Then lay up over the outside AND the inside and retain to foam as a sandwich core. Still, that's not the hardest part. Still need to build suspension, suspensions hard points, chassis, steering, windows, electricals, all the EV parts, not to mention getting it engineered and road legal. Massive project. Maybe if I were building a track demo :-)

My electronic cad program is really only good for 2D.
So better make mine a Tron bike Image

That go-cart sounds sweet Image
Just hope they dont grow up and want a real one Image
So the short answer is NO but the long answer is YES.
