Hi guys,

I am about to order a set of parts from Lloydash.

I have lost track of the 'coordinator' or if there is sufficient interest for the group buy.

Can the coordinator PM me please on the latest products and prices?

Cheers,
Mal.

They will get one of the cables from Ebay, so we don't have to cut wires inside this motor.
They missed out on one of the Ebay cables, and it's taken some time to get the info on the real connector.

So they used a technique which originated from Electronic Innovations, as relayed by Weber, who used to work there. That is to use a small ferrule to connect directly to the pins of the connector:

There was no problem spinning the motor up. It went quite smoothly up to 3000 RPM, which was as fast as they wanted to drive it without bolting it down properly, especially when the encoder connections weren't necessarily bullet proof.

So no great surprise here; the Tritium Wavesculptor 200 controller drives the motor just fine, at least with no load.

Also, lets start taking EOI for AC24L motors.

I'm keen to take one. Who else?

Remote - perhaps you could post some pics, to be sure we're all on the same page?

BTW, where are you in the US? Given the amount of money we're talking about, I'm sure you wouldn't mind a friend of mine dropping by to shake your hand?

Yep, I'd like that! I'm in Boston, MA. I work primarily out of a large hackerspace called the Artisan's Asylum here. PM me and I'll provide more contact info, phone etc.

I'm keen for one "usable" one at $200 and one "bearingless" one at a lower price, if available.

Based on the conditions below:
The "usable" one has a fully supported shaft (both bearings in end-bells)
The "bearingless" one is otherwise usable.
They are aleady re-wound to the low voltage (and are both the same voltage). Some evidence of the as-wound voltage should be provided.
Encoder bearings installed
Photos of the actual items are made available before purchase.

EDIT: I see the price of the AC24L motors on eBay has gone up to $250 each. I don't see any feedback about the motors that have already been purchased in the feedback profile, so no word on the actual condition of the motors. Some good photos of the actual motor and their various parts would probably make me feel a bit easier about it. The pallet-wrapped single photo in the listing shows nothing, and the 2-lines in the description are equally vague.

I was going to grab 5, but a work colleague that wanted 3 now only wants one, so I'd be up for 3 "usable" motors on the same conditions as BigMouse.

EDIT: Would still be keen on a group buy for a number of ancillaries (AC compressors, PS pumps) if that's going to happen at some stage ^^

Hey BigMouse and anybody else interested in these motors. This thread on DIY is a good read.

Posting the link to the image gallery HERE.

It appears then, that the $200 (now $250) motors are not usable as-is due to the bearing not being installed in the end-bell. It is installed on the shaft, but it intended to fit in to a recess in the transmission. So some custom machining would have to be done to make these work, but custom machining has to be done to make ANY electric motor work in a conversion anyway, so it's not that big of a deal. I imagine the C-face motors he also has available cost significantly more, though I haven't requested a quote.

I've posted some follow-up questions over on DIY. If the "cheap" motors aren't usable, then I won't be getting any at all. I only wanted them for experimentation and to match them to my controller. As these would mostly be bench tests and dyno tests, the machining required just to spin one up wouldn't be worth $200, and I don't need one enough to justify spending more than that on one of the C-face ones. If the splined shaft ones ARE fully supported internally, then I'll probably go for one as well as an unsupported one as I mentioned earlier.

EDIT: I'm going to give these motors a miss. They'll be a great deal for those willing to do the required machining.

I found this image, likely from an EVTV video (thanks, Jack and crew), which shows the exact model number of the motor from the auction:

Image

My motor, likely about 5 years old, is slightly different:

Image

(Please pardon the poor image; there is a little more to the nameplate, but it's covered by a bracket. )

It looks like mine is an older model (W11 vs W12), but it may indicate some other change. I can't seem to find information on the part numbering scheme.

[ Edit: also the ingress protection has improved: IP54 -> IP65. ]
[ Edit2: Possibly also insulation class F -> H ]

Wow, thanks. (Free registration required.)

It says that the Z number (W11, W12) is an option code. Unfortunately, it doesn't say what W11 or W12 mean.

Can you compare the weight please Coulomb, it is not written on your nameplate. I have been told the W12 is lighter

Exciting! We're going to have a good community of Siemens motor owners here.
I ended up importing 10 for the group buy.

Please keep us informed on how you go getting the DMOC working. What else did you get? The borgwarner gearbox?

Hi Stiive,
I obviously missed the boat on the group buy. A pitty because I would have been keen. You mentioned you got 10. Does that mean you have a spare or two?

Yeh you did unfortunately. I personally got 2 motors, but I need them both for now.
As I'm not doing a conversion however, these might come up for sale in about 10 months time.

There were 2 other participants who each got 2 as well, but they seem to be a precious commodity so i'm not sure if they'd part with theirs either Image

Well, there's still my older motor; I've been having thoughts of using it in a conversion, but a suitable money source doesn't seem to be any closer right now, so I may well weaken and take a reasonable offer.
Stiive wrote: Can you compare the weight please Coulomb, it is not written on your nameplate.
Sorry for the long delay, Stiive.

For a while I thought you just weren't using your x-ray powers properly, but alas, when I finally removed the steel motor clamp, I found (with my total lack of x-ray powers) that it's not written on the nameplate after all.

That steel motor clamp must weigh 10 kg; unfortunately I didn't think to put it on the scales when they were handy.
I have been told the W12 is lighter

You may be right:

Image

So that's ~8 kg more than the 87 kg specified on the W12 nameplate, and my bathroom scales aren't necessarily totally accurate either. That coupler thing on the drive shaft looks to be at least 5 kg, so that puts the difference at about 3 kg +- 5 kg.

I'll try and work on getting the coupler thing off soon, to get a better feel for whether there is a significant weight difference.
