This is where I got the price of $2700 for the EVSE that I mentioned at the EV Scooter work day.
I think for now it is not required to install a home EVSE but Nissan/Origin try really hard to sell their expensive EVSE.

Hi.
I received a call today from the Origin contractor used in Qld (Service Stream) who have booked in to install my home charger late next week.
Nissan Australia certainly *don't* mandate installing a charging station like the Origin supplied Chargepoint CT500 (7kW i.e. 29A capable, but the LEAF only draws 14A), but the only other official option is using a 15A GPO (which is limited by the supplied cable to 10A).
Origin initially said their charging station, which is hardwired, was incompatible with offpeak tariffs in Qld. However I provided them some written technical advice from Energex stating how it could be done, so they are now considering updating their installation offering to offer offpeak tariffs. Sadly unlikely in time for my installation. Will have to move it over later.
cheers,
Rob

To be fair, Origin are offering the J1772 charge point delivered, installed and certified with 24 months interest-free payments. It's still expensive but it's not all in one hit.

The Nissan Australia website says that there is a Level 1 cable in the boot for use with standard 15 Amp outlet. You don't need an expensive J1772 installation.

I had three phase put into my house when it was built, where the plan was that i'd be driving an EV by now.
But at least it's there, ready to go for the future. As it is i probably won't need a three phase charger for my bike, even if i could fit one in there somewhere.

I'll drive an electric vehicle one day.

It costs a maximum of $300 to fit an E-Station J1772 wall mounted charge point provided there is a 240V power supply close by. You can buy and fit the E-Station charge point for $1600 which is a grand cheaper than the competition.

Right now the general consensus in the industry is that the major car manufacturers will not fit 32 amp on board chargers to EVs. The options will be on board 15 amp chargers and off board DC fast charging straight to the battery from a dedicated DC fast charging point like the one depicted here: http://www.e-station.com.au/chademocharge.html.
This DC fast charger is a 500V, 120amp, 50KW device and it is unlikely that a local utility will approve one of these devices for installation in a domestic home or office.
Hence there is no advantage in having a three phase power supply, at least in the short to medium term, unless you acquire a converted EV with a 32 amp charger.

Got my Origin Chargepoint CT500 installed yesterday morning. Also picked up my Nissan LEAF yesterday afternoon 6/6/2012.
Main glitch was it was hard to get comprehensive insurance as the insurance companies didn't seem ready, but managed to get some in the end so I could drive away.

Hi Local,
Good to hear you have your car I'll keep an eye out for it
Maybe you could get back on at a time when you are starting to treat it like just any other car and give us some impressions, and also what your attitude then is to the petrol/diesel cars you meet on your travels.

Good point re insurance companies being ready for these EVs.
I just rang RAC in Perth (after trying a quote online) and they had no provision for the leaf although the imiev was online already.
They took on the task and rang back to say the leaf has now been added to the system.
Premium is over $900 comprehensive, not quite twice the TIIDA premium but given the leaf purchase price !!
localpower, is this similar to your premium ?
edit: BTW imiev is $660 with same settings

insurance was around $823 from memory for comprehensive. is insurance comparisons apples to apples between WA and Qld? In Qld we have compulsory third party as part of our rego which was around $318. stamp duty was around $1034 and rego was $293.35.

Had a ride in the Nissan Leaf today. Awesome car. Feels very solid on the road. Lovely driving experience.
We plugged the Leaf into the E-Station J1772 home charge point. The car charged away merrily away with no problems.
Here is some footage of an i-Miev charging from the E-Station demo charge point.

The E-Station demo charge point will be on display at the next AEVA meeting in Perth on Tuesday June 12th.

the iphone and android apps for LEAF in Australia are apparently "coming soon".
p.s. yes the car has inbuilt GPRS modem for CarWings telematics, mapping info, collecting charging/range stats etc.. Logins to CarWings for LEAF owners also "coming soon".

Hi BigMouse,
A serious comment here. The Albion Peace Centre is not easy to find. Myself and a different new visitor did a bit of sitting on the side of the road before we figured out which building was the right one. The electronic navigator didn't understand the layout of the streets. But you'll get there after a while.
Unfortunately, I have a different event happening each Wednesday evening at the moment.
