Hey all,

Has anyone else started getting phone calls about the Nissan LEAF Pre-Order?

I got a call today.

I'm currently building my home so I've asked if the can get Origin to call me ASAP so if I need to make any changes to the garage I can get the builder to do it before they finish wiring up all the lights and power points out there.

I'm not buying a leaf but it's a good idea to plan for its arrival

I've got a new garage and have 32 amp single-phase plugs fitted to the garage for when the Electron arrives.

I got my phone call from Nissan last week, and am now waiting for Origin to call me about the charger location. Nissan told me they intend to start deliveries in June.

Both Nissan and Origin have called.   

Nissan call lasted around half an hour & asked questions about the daily driving I do and also about the garage situation for charging purposes. I gather they want to discourage people who do 120km+ driving each day so there are no issues with people getting stranded.

I am disappointed that you can't slow charge on a regular 10A GPO, even if they have to restrict the current draw due to concerns about house wiring quality. Looking at third party solutions for an appropriate cable for 10A GPO support.

They will allow slow charge on a 15A GPO but restrict current draw to 10A and of course a dedicated home charging station is possible with 32A circuit with a current draw of the full 15A supported by the onboard 3.3kW charger.

Origin call asked which days suited for an inspection, but they haven't scheduled the visit yet.

As for dealerships, from what I can gather from brief conversations, none of the Qld Nissan dealers who will carry the LEAF (3 of them) have been trained in the LEAF yet but that's happening in the next week or so.

Hi, just to let you know this link does not work.. for me anyway.

I also put into the bar on my comp and also didnt work that way. Think you may need to go into edit, on your post, then there is a bar at the top, and it has a chain symbol about 4th along, which says "insert hyperlink" and that is where I think you need to go .. :)

sorry I must have broken the link. have tried to fix it and it seems to work now.

The cost of the LEAF is $51,500 RRP plus onroad costs which I think add around $4-$5000 in Qld for stamp duty, first year registration, compulsory third party insurance, dealer delivery fees etc.

Have you been in contact with http://evseupgrade.com/?.
The Australian iMiev comes with a 15A plug on the EVSE but charges at less than 10A so maybe the Leaf EVSE will be the same and just need an adaptor to plug into 10A outlets?

Yes I have been in touch with them and they say they can make a 240V 8A current draw cable.

Do you know what current draw the iMiev cable provides?

I understand it's got a 16kWh battery and it takes 7 hours to fully charge. This would imply it uses 10A of a 15A cable. (240 V x 10A = 2400W x 7 hours = 16.8 kWh.)

The iMiev I measured drew 9.5A@230V

current drawn probably increases if voltage falls and vice versa
If I had more time with it I could have tested more (grid voltage varies largely with time of day)

as far as "making" a 240V 8A cable, the current draw won't fall unless the charger is told to reduce power.

I would be fine with just making an adapter cable that lets you plug a 15A plug into a 10A socket

Note: very few people will be willing to make one, as it is expressly forbidden under AS3000
However changing the plug on the car would probably affect your warranty some :)

btw - My bike draws 9.5A @ 230vac, I have been doing this for years.
Worst that has happened is an old (corroded terminals) outdoor point I have been using welded itself to the extension lead I was using.
No drama, just means I can't unplug :)

all 10A GPO's either have a 10A fuse or a 16A CB or larger, so you should be fine there.

My understanding is that the cable with the 15A plug that comes with the LEAF has some firmware which "tells" the onboard charger (which can draw 15A) to only draw 10A.

By a third party making a cable with a 10A plug which only draws 8A, it would be a cable with a 10A plug which "tells" the onboard charger to only draw 8A (or whatever current they program in there). What in AS3000 says that would be expressly forbidden?

Also it's not changing the plug on the car at all, it would be using a different third party cable which draws less current than the supplied one. How would than negatively impact the warranty?

Ah, I missed that bit.

The EV's made by the major manufacturers are intended to be plugged into smart charge points that tell the charger what the max current to draw is.

Our powerpoints aren't that smart yet, so the work around is to use a special cable that generates the limiting signal.

It sounded like you were either:

1) replacing the 15A plug on the cable that came with the car with a 10A one (not good for warranty as a 10A plug is really only good for 7.5A continuous, although in the DIY world we run them at 10A continuous anyway)

or

2) making an adapter that would allow you to plug a 15A plug into a 10A powerpoint (a no-no under AS3000)

buying a power lead with the little box generating a pilot signal telling the charger not to go above 8A and using a 10A plug is perfectly fine.

IIRC, the charger in the leaf is capable of drawing up to 16A@240v if you have a big enough powerpoint and can generate the right pilot signal.

The DIY in me would probably modify one of the in-line boxes to allow user selectable charge current, similar to the manzita micro PFC chargers

One of our Perth branch members has an AMP-FIBIAN 10A to 15A adapter to charge his iMiEV at any 10A outlet.

I'm starting to think a Leaf might be an acceptable alternative to banging my head against a brick wall trying to get a controller to run my 650v electric transaxle. A colleague is about to buy one, once Origin get his garage juiced up to 3 phase. I await developments with interest.
Meanwhile charging stations are popping up like mushrooms & not having anything to plug into them is giving me so much anxiety I might have to seek counseling. Spotted yesterday on Glebe point rd, Origin kiosks that seem to be 'free' to use?! I want to buy or build an AC EV so bad I can almost taste it.

Dead link Matt but I'm trying to warm to the Leaf's body lines. I read in a motoring mag the other day that Nissan racing dropped a Leaf battery/drive into a carbon fibre racer 600 kg lighter than the Leaf. That takes the power-to-weight ratio from 50kw/tonne to more like 80kw/tonne. Now that would be performance I could warm to!

I use one of those Watts clever meters on my Vectrix

Pretty good meters, my only gripe is it resets by itself once you go past 999kwh :(

I was using it as a long term measure of how much energy has been used to date, but I'm not sure how many times its gone round...

they're pretty good.

The PF measured is true power factor, taking into account both displacement PF and harmonics

all my chargers are PF corrected, but the ones that aren't don't show 1

Returning to the subject of this thread for a moment:

Origin Energy came last Thursday to assess the location where I wanted the charging point.

Today I got the assessment report (it's all good).

Now I wait for Nissan to call me to get the ball rolling.

Nissan UK have mandated EVSE(Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) for charging the Leaf which essentially means home charging via a J1772 cable attached to a wall mounted charge point installed on a dedicated circuit rated to 25 amps. The on board charger in the Nissan Leaf draws just under ten amps.

Nissan UK do supply an EVSE cable with the car. This cable has J1772 connector at one end and a standard domestic plug at the other end for plugging into a standard domestic 10amp socket. However Nissan UK Leaf customers must agree to the terms and conditions of the sales contract which state that this cable can only be used in "emergencies".

I have no ideal whether or not Nissan Australia will adopt the same policy.
