Well my dream of being able to afford to buy a Leaf has just been crushed.
Over on the Nissan Leaf Australia facebook page a RRP of $51,500 has been announced. http://www.facebook.com/nissanleafaustralia
I had been overly optimistic of a price under $40,000..
I did some price comparisons a while ago for the Leaf
UK $47319 AUD
2011 Canada SV 38,395.00 CAD = 36,907.80 AUD
US 2012 SV $35200 USD = $34,452.38 AUD
*edit* Looks like we are only going to get the top of the range model in Aus which bumps up the price by $1000.
Not to mention the kick in the guts is these prices are before any subsidies..

Simon, I don't think we should be comparing our price to the US or Canadian prices, because as far as I'm aware Australia will be getting the Japanese "G" model of the LEAF. http://ev.nissan.co.jp/LEAF/GRADE/sim.html
When you compare the Australian price with the Japanese price there isn't much difference. The Japanese site also shows the price before any tax breaks or gov' discounts.
While I'm still not impressed with the Australian price, I did have an idea that it was going to be around as much as it is because of how hight the Japanese price is.

Hi,
I guess if it's all about the price of a small car vs the Leaf, then whoever is going for the small car will find the Leaf price impossible to pay.
However, for the many more who might buy a a medium or larger car just because that's what they usually buy, those people should seriously consider an electric car.
If you look at the price of holdens and fords once you bypass the entry level, you get leaf/imiev/electron prices for a whole lot of maintenance/insurance/fuel costs and without the satisfaction of sitting in silence at the lights listening to the idling motors and feeling the puffs of exhaust ruffling you shins (ok, I'm including electric bikes here).
For the adventurous, I don't know in what way the main-stream manufacturers are building in income streams (like trying very hard to control consistent services, charging for electronic services, whatever they have thought of) but I want to think that the Electrons I'm buying are going to allow me to minimise servicing costs and attention. The latest one will have similar performance to the Leaf, I understand, but it will be a straight-forward car without undue gizmos.

The pricing I anticipated was $45k to $55k. It is an early adopters price. Nissan's other two plants are yet to add to the cost reduction. To convert to similar is about $40k for DIY so a premium of $51k, as with Blade, for warranty and peace of mind is fair. Agree too about other savings possible. No doubt Blade will feel the pinch The huge advantage Blade has is the elegant simplicity. Less to go wrong. That is my concern of the LEAF that it is all vey nice until 20 years down the road and parts become - well - scarce. But then - the shell is a shell is a shell and DIYers will rehouse lol
Adding by edit . . .
Canadian Price announced last week - CAD$38400 - now I am not sure if that includes tax. That's AU$37000

Yes but Tesla have been a little tricky with the Model 'S' in that the standard battery pack option isn't the long range pack (from what I have seen on their website). Once it hits the deck in Oz what will it really be? Pricing, options?

But isn't the smallest Tesla S pack larger than the Leaf's?
The Telsa S seems to come in large, larger, and enormous (pack energy). I don't recall specific numbers.

It's this options information that is missing from all the LEAF and i-MiEV information that we're getting from their own sites. Tesla are laying it our straight and clear. To get any info about the LEAF you've really got to dig through the Japanese site. The Australian and US Nissan sites don't give any info.

Large = 40 kWh
Larger = 60 kWh
Enormous = 85 kWh
15A 240 V power point = about 3.5kW so you'd want a fast charger...
US $47500 before credit looks awesome.

Woody the Tesla Model S is $57400 USD for the base model before tax credits.
I guess that will translate to about $100,000 AUD then?

Big ain't beautiful looking at those Tesla model S numbers.
40kwh pack 160mi range = 156w/km
60kwh pack 250mi range = 163w/km
85kwh pack 200mi range = 177w/km
for a 125% increase in battery they get only an 88%increase in range.

112.5% more battery = 88% more range
the 85kwh option has more power, which may increase energy usage if driven harder
