There have been sightings of a Moke in Perth with what appears to be Sky Energy cells in the back tray.
But no-one is claiming responsibility for it...

Sorry I can't find anything specific that has already been done.
Maybe you would be the first?!?

EDIT: Speeling makes all the duffrence

There's a Mini conversion in Melbourne that's been around for 5-6 years. Custom BLDC motor & controller through a chain drive, and I think it was PbA batteries.

A Moke would be a great conversion. If you are mechanically adept a modern FWD train while getting rid of the gearbox-in-sump while you are at it. The Moke has all that space in the side cavities which would be good space for part of the pack.
You would have to start with a good one to make the project worthwhile.

There's a moke conversion underway in Sydney, but I've only heard 2nd hand. Headway batteries. There is also another Mini conversion completed fairly recently in Sydney, my friend's boss's. Conversion done by Thunderbolt I think - DC / ThunderSky?.

Mini would be great! Almost chose to do a Mini panel van before going VW. Didn't come across too many examples in early research. What's the GVM on a moke/mini?

Hmmm it says controller limited to 320A(8C) for 112kph will go much faster unlimited.
144V pack
72V loss for 320A
is 23kW

Does this sound correct?

I am currently in the process of converting a Moke with no gearbox
it is a little tight but will all fit very neatly
i am using an r160 diff and 17r costov with a blower belt drive showing through the grill
will have the motor and diff assembly finished and test fitted to the car by the end of next week hopefully (between other jobs )
the side pods do make good battery boxes but not quite enough room will fit about 96 headways in each side and 80 in the front or could go between the rear subframe but more weight in the front would be better

Have often thought of using a Moke as a hybrid elec. by removing the back axle assembly and replacing it with a complete rear axle, including the diff, from another small car. This way an elec motor could be coupled to the diff and the original motor and gearbox can be left intact. The generator could also be used to charge the batteries. The vehicle would then have tons of range, could be used as elec only or ICE only, or both, giving it also a 4WD capacity.

sounds like a plan but would have trouble getting it registered as it wasn't originally 4wd
but staring with a small 4wd would work
eg suzuki 4*4 chassis with a moke body !

That's the main reason i built an electric bicycle. No reg. licensing or certification.

Darren Hamley has converted a Moke in Perth. He drives it every day and it is a great conversion. Mokes are very light weight and have plenty of space in the back for batteries, very simple.

I suspect the crash safety rating would be somewhat less than a Jumbuck (which apparently is not saying much ;)

Being rear-ended by a 4WD in a moke I imagine is a once in a lifetime experience. (very near the end of your life)

There's only one question left to be ask... is it under-driven or over-driven Image

If the system is actually capable of 150kW in a Moke then I'd say it's over-driven!

Nice to see someone else using Headways - I don't feel so alone now Image. Very neat wiring Geoff. What did they mean by a "Choke" loom?

I think its a little bit overdriven
electric cars dont have to be slow!
a choke loom is a Chinese Moke loom quite well made compared to the original except it doesnt come with a wiring diagram and you have to work it all out yourself
headways will be good but a bit of work

finished the wiring and the wheels turned on sunday
just needs the battery packs fitted now

The mokes going !!

The timing belt makes a distinctive sound but is not annoyingly noisy it is very smooth and no vibrations as per the original ice
the motor and diff is solid mounted to the subframe also

Would happily accelerate over 100km/h without any problem at a max of 200a   the gauge is not calibrated yet so I don’t know if that is completely correct

Brakes need a good bleed and windscreen needs a clean

The controller got warm to touch the motor got a little warmer 5 seconds touch is enough this was straight after 100km/h run and straight into the shed

much nicer to drive than the original ice powered car i must say !

Hmmm that's a shame. I was as keen as mustard to see http://www.mokesinc.org/index.php/topic,7783.0.html but it looks to me like http://www.mokesinc.org is completely gone.

Is similar material now anywhere else?
