Hi All,
I've put up a videoblog site showing the current goings-on with my EV conversion of a 1990 Ford Capri.
http://www.evcapri.com
There will be 5 minute video episodes as well [edit] (there are four now...more every week or so).
Have a laugh at my expense, or offer help - all good.
Cheers,
Kearon

Nice work Kearon,
A real motivation for the rest of us noobs to get started. Hopefully I can attend the next Sydney meeting and get enough info and contacts to start my own EV.
Keep up the good work
Cheers,
CS

Hey Kearon,
I've just watched episode three, and in follow-up to our email conversation, I'd like to know how tall you are.
I'm 6'4", so I'm thinking that a Capri may not be the car for me.
Time to look for alternatives. Possible a KC/KE Laser.
I love the video-blog format. Keep up the fantastic work.

Hi Striker,
I'm 6 foot, blond, 36D, and my friends think I'm a bubbly outgoing type who likes waterskiing and picnics in the park.
Your type?
(heh heh....)
Nah - but really - I reckon if you're 6'4" you'd pretty much be sitting at the same height as me.

Hey Kearon,
Them's pretty big boobs for a bloke
The extra 4" in height is a worrying thing.
Any chance I could drop over at some point, and check out the car (as well as have a sit in it). Promise I won't hit the brake pedal

hey Kearon,
i'm Lovin following your little adventure, good luck with it!
I see that you're using your old gearbox. Will the clutch be operational?

Well, changing gears will be operational, but i won't need the clutch to do it!
The electric motor doesn't have inertia like the old ICE did - so all I need to do is take my foot off the accelerator and change gears.
So - no clutch. Not needed!

Thats exellent. I never knew the gear box would work like that. I'm guessing that while driving you won't need all of the gears. prob 1st, 3rd & 5th?
I'm just wondering about the battery weight Vs the weight of the old ICE & components, do u have a rough figure for weight comparsion? Is there any reason you've chosen to put all the batteries under the back seat? I was picturing you putting some of the batteries in the front to balance the weight.

Hi Rattrap,
I think you'll find the answerto all these questions in my 'EV Capri' videos on youttube (or on evcapri.com).
The only gear you'll need from 0 to 60 is 3rd, then you can try 4th or 5th. No need for 1st or 2nd(I have a gear ration table on evcapri.com).
And the batteries will be sunk into the floor under the back seat - they'll fit, and I have the added benefits of keeping all the batteries in one box (good for balancing the temperature of them) and kkeeping the weight between the axles (for better handling). Yeah, I thought I'd need to put batteries in the fron too, but it hasn't needed to happen that way.. And re weight, it'll work out about the same, give or take 50kgs.

Heya Woody,
Dunno. I'll email Rod Dilkes and find out.... I'm assuming another couple of weeks.
UPDATE: They'll be in the country 2nd week August - then I have to get 'em from WA to NSW, then pick 'em up....I'm thinking in my hands here at EV Capri HQ late Aug.

Hey All,
EV Capri Ep 4 is up. You can see it on youtube, or at www.evcapri.com
On Ep 4 I'm installing the Impulse 9 motor, and talk a little bit about the vacuum pump, the heater, and a government-required battery pack cutoff switch. Cheers, K

Another hugely entertaining episode, great work guys! – but you do realise that would have been a whole lot easier to have put that in from the top with some descent rope and a long bar or sturdy piece of wood.

Would have been just as easy to sit the engine/gearbox on a trolly jack and use that to do the heavy lifting, while someone kept it balanced on the jack.

In other news, I got the motor mounts finished today! I'll spray 'em tomororrow, in case anyone wants to visit the EV Capri after Brooky Pub on Tuesday.

Hi Kearon,
Great work, I'm sure you will inspire heaps of people to follow your footsteps!! (hope you've cleaned up that break fluid)
I am thinking of converting an old ...wait for it....
volvo station waggon, Weird I know, but hey, no one would ever want to steal it. even thinking about putting solar panels on the roof - aka solar taxi style. That would disguise it a bit.
Waiting with anticipation for the next episodes and stuff Dr Who for a while!
Rgds

ps did the capri have power steering?
