Kona EV AC charging Current Limit

Post by Newman »

Has anybody with a Kona EV noted the "current/power" levels available using a 7kW AC charging station?

Apparently there are 3 levels available from the vehicle adjustment.
For example if you have a 7kW charger available,
Max setting from the vehicle is 7kW
What are the Konas 2 lower power settings?

I haven't seen this information anywhere and it's no good asking the dealers as they really have no clue.

It would be good to adjust the kW input to utilize your spare available rooftop solar without stepping over into fossil power.

Hi there - haven't tried the different levels via the in-car settings, only the levels using the adjustable EVSE I have. Will have a play next time I charge and let you know.

Cheers

The first setting is 75%. The next setting is 50%.

If you play with the settings on both the EVSE and the Kona you can get power levels from 7.4kW to 500 watts. If you set the EVSE on 6 amps you can get around 900 watts on reduced and 500 watts on minimum, depending on your voltage.

75% of the 7 kW maximum for the onboard charger? Or 75% of the maximum for the EVSE?
I ask because our car normally charges using the Reduced (75%) setting, and it draws about 4.3 kW. Our EVSE has a maximum draw of about 6 kW (25 A), we had it turned down somewhat from its maximum setting as we only have a 32 A circuit breaker on the garage.
75% of 7 kW is 5.25 kW.
75% of 6 kW is 4.5 kW.

I just went out to do some testing, but the car won't charge at a rate greater than 2.8 kW right now. Presumably because it is at 81% capacity, or possibly because it is cold (about 0°C at the moment).
The charging rates are named 'Reduced' and 'Minimum'.

This is why I have a Zappi - it monitors power export and modulates it's own power use to keep export as close to 0 as possible.

Max of the EVSE.

Thanks everyone, that's great info.
So a fixed output EVSE of say 7kW should, by vehicle adjustments give
7kW Maximum, 5.25kW Reduced and 3.5kW Minimum, or at 6km/kWh;
42km/hr, 31km/hr and 21km/hr respectively...

At the moment I only have the granny cable supplied with the vehicle
which only yields 2.2kW max or 12-15km/hr.
I'm yet to purchase a 32Amp charging station.

It would be 75% of the max for the on board charger or the EVSE, whichever is lower.
