Kona EV Real World Range Experience
In Australia the Kona EV is the "only" competitor to the Tesla Model 3 SR+ ( LEAF only 40kWh in Australia unfortunately ) I was hopeful the recent buyers may throw some light onto their urban range experience and country 110km observations. Even if SOC at A and B with time and distance a estimation can be made. Also note aircon off/on temperature outside too if using aircon.
The Kona offers some advantages over the TM3 SR+ hence my curiosity.
Thanks.

Re: Kona EV Real World Range Experience
I should pick mine up on the 6th of September. Ceramic Blue Kona Highlander.
As I am a full blown nerd, I will spreadsheet the "beep" out of that car. And share if anyone is interested.
As a field service engineer, my current average daily drive is spot on 100km.
I do drive like a grandma, my current consumption after 55000km from a 2018 Honda CR-V VTi-LS (1.5 litre turbo)(for sale by the way) is exactly 7.6L/100km, so I'm hoping to achieve the Kona's ~15kW/100km.
It will be hard though as my driving mix is more freeway than city, an advantage for an ICE but not for an EV.
By the way, the Kona has a much better range than the Tesla SR+ model 3 as Tesla is still quoting NEDC instead of the much more realistic WLTP. And I couldn't justify the $95000 of the LR.
Cheers,
Patrick

115Wh/km in the city and around 145Wh/km on the highway. My worst so far was 171Wh/km on an extended country trip with heavy rain, strong winds, standing water, elevation changes and mostly highway speeds.

Re: Kona EV Real World Range Experience
Wow! Impressive. Thank you for the numbers.
My first long trip on week 1 or 2 is 420km with no charge stop if possible. I guess if I stick to 100km/h I should be fine.
And the night in Echuca where they have Telsa destination chargers only. But according to many, they work on the Kona.

Re: Kona EV Real World Range Experience
Yesterday did 360 km 110-115 kmh freeway about 1hr each way, 105 kmh .5hr each way all with cruise on and quite a few hills up and down. the rest of the driving was city stop start traffic.
the trip included day and night driving with ac on 50% of the time and when i was home had averaged 14.2kwh per 100km
I'm sure with your driving habits you will easily exceed these numbers
Enjoy your car.

In Australia we still use NEDC unfortunately but it's useful to compare efficiency between models that have had the same testing...EVdownUnder wrote: ↑Thu, 22 Aug 2019, 19:46 I should pick mine up on the 6th of September. Ceramic Blue Kona Highlander.

Re: Kona EV Real World Range Experience
On the subject of consumption, is there a best way to describe it.
15Kw/100Km or 225Wh/Km or something else.
I prefer 5.8L/100Km to Km/L or anything else.
Which consumption figure can we best get a feel for (there's a better way to say that but I can't think of it right now).
It would be good if we starting using the consumption method that is most informative and needs the least explanation when comparing things
Just an idea.

Either method but familiarity breeds confidence. I have got use to kWh/100km as the “tank” range is easier to estimate

155Wh/100km at that speed and air-con is very impressive. It shows that the aerodynamic of a TM3 is significantly better than a Kona. I will test it all with the Kona starting on the 7th of September.photomac wrote: ↑Fri, 23 Aug 2019, 13:58 Thanks EVdownUnder and great stats reecho! More more more please! There's actually only a factor of 10 between the two types of measurement. Ie 150wh/km is the same as 15kwh/100kmbladecar wrote: ↑Fri, 23 Aug 2019, 20:28 On the subject of consumption, is there a best way to describe it.

Re: Kona EV Real World Range Experience
Oops, seems we have two threads converging on similar things!
Re-post below of my final entry in the 'Melbourne - Sydney - Melbourne in a Kona' thread to add to the Kona economy discussion.
Screen-shot from Kona below.
From the top:
Top line: return trip Canberra - Melb. 110km/h, heater on most of way. (3 degrees as I left) Comfort setting.
Second: Syd - Canberra in evening. 110km/h most of way, heater on most of way. Eco setting most of way.
Third: Canberra - Syd. 110km/h most of way, no heater. Comfort setting.
Fourth: Melb - Canberra. 110km/h most of way, heater for about 1/3 of time. Comfort setting.
Last line: suburban driving in Melb. Comfort setting.
For the third line (Canberra-Sydney): not sure if it was the no heater, downhill a lot of the way or the Eco setting that did the most for the improved economy on that run.
Will do some experimenting on the run around Victoria in 2 weeks time.
Cheers
Bryce

In two most recent cars, plug in hybrid Volt and petrol VW Golf, I have always had about that ratio of 'fuel' consumption on Canberra->Sydney vs Sydney->Canberra trips, which I attribute to the 600m height difference.
Daihatsu charade conversion 2009-18, Mitsubishi iMiEV 2013-2019, Holden Volt 2018-2019, Hyundai Kona 2019-2023, Hyundai Ioniq 5 2023-present on the ACT's 100% renewable electricity.

I've had my Kona Highlander since 13th July, and already clocked up 2800 kms, driving around Sydney to check in at as many charging stations as I can on Plugshare! I've got some basic numbers, but was a bit too lazy to fire up the spreadsheets. Not nerdy enough I guess?
My goal is to visit as many NRMA Fast Chargers as possible. Doing the ones closest to Sydney, and working my way out.
Sydney to Wallsend (Newcastle) 150 kms one way. Used 35%
Sydney to Mittagong - 200 km round trip - used 28% going there, 16% coming back (Mittagong is approx 700 m elevation, and was battling very gusty headwind)
Sydney to Lithgow - 130 km going there - 32% used (drove B59 road via Bilpin). Charged up to 87%, went back via Katoomba. But this was the exciting part. From Katoomba to the start of the M4, the car used a total of 1% charge! I usually drive in Eco mode with level 3 regen. 50 kms travelled on 1%. So efficient! Arrived home with 73% SoC.
My next experiment this coming weekend is to drive Sydney to the NRMA Fast Charger in Jugiong and back. Round trip of 700 kms, about 9-10 hours with charging times. Planning on leaving with 95% SoC, quick top up in Mittagong, and continue on. I'm really excited to see how well the car performs, and nervous because of the unknowns (will the chargers be occupied/working - will I have to travel at lower speeds to get as much range as possible).
Overall I am averaging 12.9 kWh/100km.
Am loving this car, and given the choice, will never buy a fossil again!

At least two good options for lunch in Jugiong. Bring your granny charger and an extension cord. You can use the 10A socket in the toilet block in the park, if all else fails.

Wife’s trips driving to work and back, mix of speed depending on traffic. Mix of motorways and suburban streets dropping kids off at school daycare ect on her way.

Re: Kona EV Real World Range Experience
The long journey on this screen is Kalbarri to Perth. 1 hour top up in Geraldton using 7.2kW AC while having breakfast. 50mins top up in Jurien Bay at Caltex using the generously “donated” SETEC at 36kW. The range-o-meter to destination started at 100km leaving Jurien and ended up at 60km as a stiff headwind kicking off part way. From my first country sojourn allow 19kWh/100km sitting at 100kph
Yes, we can.

Re: Kona EV Real World Range Experience
Got it ! Picked it up last Friday late afternoon, unfortunately just before a rotten weekend in Melbourne. And as irony would have it, my number plate ends in BP and the floor protection when I picked it up is sponsored by Caltex... To top this, LeasePlan followed there procedure to the letter and sent me 2 fuel cards ??? Good on them.
It took me some time to come and share the good news as I was too busy sitting in it marvelling at the future (and playing with the settings).
It really feels like being in an episode of Star Trek. This is my first EV and it is as exciting as I was anticipating. The torque, void of noise is mind-bending.
I've only got 280km on the clock so far so too early for spreadsheets just yet. Especially as I can't stop telling people that I just bought and EV, and as I know an abnormal number of nerds, they invariably want a ride, and invariably want to drag race anything on 4 wheels. I know it's just a Kona, but for EV novice the Kona torque is already grin inducing.
But I can already see that in Melbourne, travelling 50/50 highway/other, 12-13kW/100km is totally realistic if pre-warming the car on mains power in the morning and none or very little heating during the day.
So far I see no reason to install a 7.2kW charger at home for me as I rarely have less than 12 hours available for "granny cable" charge. This may change if I have 3 200+km days in a row... And even then, as per most Aussie families, I always have the second car (Subaru Outback) as backup.
The fast growing number of Tesla destination chargers work a charm too.
Questions:
Is there an app/website where I can see if a Tesla destination charger is available?
Cheers,
Patrick
