Destination chargers for Motels, etc: Suggested install?

Post by doug »

Hi,
I just overnighted in a Motel & was discussing Destination chargers with the owner. This got me thinking...

I think there is a need for a ´Minimal´ & a ´Recommended Minimum´ installation for Business premises including businesses such as Motels.

Eventually we could even have a promotion on this recommendation?

I feel the minimum Destination charger would be 15A single phase with Customer supplied cable (Ie EVSE with CCS2 socket)

I feel we should promote universal chargers (in lieu of T.... destination chargers which do not work with some CCS2 vehicles)

Can we knock this around a bit?

regards, Doug

Hi Doug

Good ideas!

Did the motel already have EV charging available or were you trying to convince the owner to introduce charging facilities?

What was the owner's opinion about charging facilities?

I like your proposal but as usual the devil is in the detail. Do you want to "force" (legally) businesses to introduce charging facilities? What businesses apart from motels would be included in your proposal?

Cheers
Paul

Big fan of the 32 amp three phase socket for these reasons.

I'm guessing @doug doesn't mean a legal minimum. Just something that can be provided to accommodation providers as the most basic, useful service to offer.

My guess would be a 15A power point. All EV owners have a portable EVSE with either a 10A or 15A plug (either of which can plug into a 15A socket). The outlet itself is readily available, cheap to install, and reliable. It can provide 3.6 kW which can provide around 30-45 kWh overnight, plenty for an overnight stay.

The Newell Highway is also undernourished.
This thread appears to be about accommodation charging?

Yeah I’m hoping the mods fix it.

I'm a bit slow. Didn't realise what a mod was! Finally realised that I am one....

Good: 15A socket
Better: 32A 5 pin 3 phase socket
Best: Type 2 untethered wallbox

I second Reecho's suggestions.
Might tweak though to:
Very good: 32A 1 phase untethered EVSE
Best: 32A 3 phase untethered EVSE
cheers
