North WA Tesla chargers query

Post by sleeperpservice »

Hi There we will be taking the Ioniq on a trip to Kalbarri and am wondering if I can get some clarification on the plugs at a couple of stops.

I am not relying on them and we don't have a 3phase connected EVSE.

Both indicate type 2 plugs but from the photos it looks like both only have a Tesla destination charger and 3phase plugs.

A Kona has visited Northampton but used the 3phase.

Does this mean the Tesla destination charges are non Tesla compatible?

Hi

As you say both those locations indicate they have Type 2, 3 phase and Tesla Destination chargers. I don't have an Ioniq so don't know how they would go charging there. My EV is a conversion done back in 2008 - 2009 and has a 3 pin connector on the car. One of the adaptors I have allows me to use Tesla destination chargers but also allows me to use Type 2 chargers. I therefore assume Type 2 and Tesla destination chargers are interchangeable.

Have you tried charging your Ioniq at a Tesla destination charger near your home?

Cheers

Stop at Jurien Bay and use the 40 kW DC veg oil charger on your way to Geraldton. In Gero, there is a Tritium charger Harald Murphy set up out at the port. Or, use the Ocean Apartments Tesla charger - it's old enough to work on the Ioniq. Bring a 32 A plug and EVSE just in case.
You should be able to get from Gero to Kalbarri on one charge with ease.

Thanks Chris and Paul

I am 4 from 4 for Tesla destination chargers but I know they can be set to not work with non Tesla cars.

That was the plan Chris but we wont be able to get our hands on a 5 pin 32A plug and EVSE I would say. Have been meaning to get one or try open EVSE but have been dithering at the cost.

I guess I will be testing them out for others silly enough to take an Ioniq North :) Also will see how long this 600km challenge will be but will be taking it easy. I reckon door to door will be 10 hours.

For Type 2 EVs,
My current research is that HPWCs with Tesla Part No.

a) 00/01 - DIP switchable for all EVs
b) 02/03/06/07 - locked into Teslas
c) 81 - charge all EVs eg. Rockingham, Williams. Tesla Perth (they've removed themselves from PlugShare), Maddington Toyota untested.

Gen 3 HPWCs can be set wirelessly to charge all EVs.

Note that Ioniq 38kWh charges slower after 50% on DC.

Thanks Joseph

Know the charging curve well and we will have to go into the very slow zone I suspect on this trip but there has only been once where the troops were ready to go before the car was was at the level needed. Hopefully we don't block others!
