Crossing the mountains

Post by Nagaman »

We are hoping to get a Model 3 SR+ soon but I’m doing some homework on range when crossing a high mountain range; specifically from Bright to Lakes Entrance via the the Great Alpine Hwy.
There is to be a Supercharger installed at Ovens (just past Myrtleford) soon but nothing useful beyond destination charging at Lakes, so I’m wondering if anyone has done this particular trip and noted how much energy was consumed getting to Hotham and whether the 258 km trip can be done without that anxiety thing.
Regards David.

Hi Dave-did it in a Kona about 2 months ago. Bairnsdale to Myrtleford. Arrived with about 100km range to spare. (Was running heater over the mountain though. 0 and below and still lots of snow then). There is a type 2 AC charger at Hotham if you are nervous though.
Cheers

Thanks Bryce
A supercharger is being installed in Ovens (just E of Myrtleford) soon it seems, so our favourite trip to Lakes via the gorgeous Alpine Way is the template for whether the SR+ is going to meet our needs.....it’s 253 kms according to mr Google and the highest consumption is from Harrietville to Hotham which is only about 35 kms.
I’d love to see the SOC at beginning and end for that section.

Just back from crossing Mt Hotham
Harrietville to Omeo 86km 11kwh @125/km. Omeo Motel via granny cord.....official charging planned.
Omeo to Harrietville 86km 9kwh @ 104/km

It’s definitely a town and mountain car (slow average speeds) and copes with fast open roads.
