iMiev Safari Sydney to Brisbane

Post by roddilkes »

My daughter Leela took my fatherly advice and bought a 2010 iMiev from Michael Symons in Sydney.
Just 9000kms on the clock.
She is from WA but moving to Brisbane to study this week.
I had the bright idea that we might drive it from Sydney to Brisbane so that is what we are doing right now.
It is really turning into quite an adventure and we are making a dodgy video of the experience.
In Newcastle charging as I write...

Have you got all of the places to charge planned? A LEAF owner made the trip down and back from Beaudesert. The trip took him about a week while visiting friends and family along the way. He mapped the places he charged on Plugshare. Good luck with your adventure!

Best of luck with it Rod and Leela! I'm sure the AEVA members along the way will help make the trip a bit shorter.

Nice one, Good to see you went ahead with the Imiev. Image

It sounds like a great adventure. A Long distance EV drive is Something I always wanted to try one day in the Imiev.

Following along with interest. If you can share some statistics collected along the way that would be great.

It'll be interesting to see how long it takes - nearly 1,000km - call it 9 charge cycles, at let's say 6 hours each, so you'll have a couple stretches of actual driving per day... and a lot of loooong lunches!

Yes it would depend on how and when you charge.

longest way would be just to stay in hotel / caravan parks each night for 9 days and just charge over night. cars ready to go in the morning.

Or less relaxing way would be to push two charge cycles out of the car each day and get it done in 4-5 days.

Top up battery in the trunk like I use from time to time could come in handy to stretch things out to the next AC outlet.

Some times it's nice to travel a a slow pace and take things in as long as the area is nice. Sydney to Brisbane is at least a ok drive with things worth stopping for while charging along the way.

Sure picked a hot time of year to be doing it though. The Aircon would be getting a work out in the Imiev. lucky it doesn't use much power. Night time only driving might net a 3 - 5% gain without aircon.

Nice to meet you and the family today Rod, The imiev looks great. I'll let you tell the story, but for the others, they are past Port Macquarie, so I'd call that half way.

Good luck with the rest of the drive!

Jeff did Beaudesert to Sydney in a LEAF. Might be able to use some of the charging stops he did.

I did make quite a detailed itinerary spreadsheet for the trip the week before we left. I will post it when we are done with the trip.

We have pretty much stuck to it apart from a desperate situation in Glendale on Wednesday where it took us 6 hours to find a charge with just our normal plug and 4 kms of range. Finally we hooked up with "Mangrove Mike" from Telligence software in Newcastle, good bloke.

Thanks to Stuart, Heather and Lex for hosting us in Port Macquarie last night. We had a great chat about electric cars and boats and solar power.

Yes, we had a very long lunch today in a nice restaurant in Coffs Harbour. Just as well because it was raining like crazy all day.

Peter and Peter at SI Clean Energy in Coffs were very generous, allowing us to park the iMiev inside at their new J1772 charging station.
Luckily it has a 15A GPO on the other side, GOOD FEATURE!
We chatted for ages.

Michael Symons has been phoning twice a day to check our progress.

We have a 100km range @ 80kmh on the highway. Shorter runs we can do faster and use the aircon also. The girls tried the heater today but it REALLY reduces the range. Lucky Leela is moving to Brisbane.

We made it to Grafton just now. Friday arvo. Very picturesque place from the drive in. Staying at Victoria St appartments, airBNB. The lady was so sweet she even left an extension cord plugged in for us.

I just overheard the family upstairs talking about the iMiev that they could see from their balcony. The young kids were asking why it was plugged in and the father said its a very special car that uses batteries and charges up from the electricity.

One of the kids immediately said "It doesn't make any CO2".

Yes the Heater is basically a 5kw electric kettle Image The Air con on the other hand is very efficient variable speed unit.

I haven't used the heater at all in Brisbane. I have used the heated drivers seat a few times.

Great to see the trip is going to plan.

Awesome trip, thanks for posting. I feel a bit vulnerable in the iMiEV when passing Bdoubles just going from Gosford to Hornsby, so you are doing well for your huge trip.

This iMiev does not have a pilot signal coming from the J1772.
We only found this out the first time we tried to charge at Newcastle.
Michael had actually never used the J1772 plug except that he had a "hot" lead going to a 15A plug.
Thanks for the pointers Greg, will follow this up.
In the meantime I purchased an inline converter from Suzi Auto as a quick fix.
Thanks for the good wishes...

WE MADE IT!

Saturday arvo we sailed into Brisbane.
Easy as you like.
Got lots of video so will work on compiling a short video.

How many Dilkes Hoffmans does it take to charge an Electric iMiev?

Thanks Kurt, sorry to have missed meeting you.
Leela made it to the meeting, I had to fly home.
Right after I got back my computer crashed and I have only just got back on deck.
Here is the itinerary we followed.
