Sudden reduction in RR

Post by Greg partridge » Tue, 21 Apr 2015, 19:16

I have noticed a sudden reduction in my remaining range when my Imiev is fully charged. It use to be 89-95ish with no air conditioning or heating ect, however now it has dropped to 63-69 kms fully charged with all the extras turned off. I Drive very lightly on the peddle too. Any suggestions why this has occurred

Sudden reduction in RR

That's a pretty big drop but it may just be temperature. The colder weather has started earlier this April than last year - by a significant amount. My range (not iMiev) has suddenly dropped as well.
In Melbourne, April 2014 didn't see less than 10°C overnight for the first three or so weeks. This year it's been about 5 or 6°C for at least the last week and under 10 for the last 2 weeks.

Tyre rolling resistance increases with lower temps.
Tyre pressure drops at lower temps (add to sidewall temp. issues)
Air density is higher at lower temps.

Are you driving in the colder part of the day lately? (night)

If you can measure your charging energy you may find that you are putting the same amount as always back into the pack - just not going as far.

Finally. Even though the RR says < 70k - is that real? Could it be that you are driving heavily in the last few km before charging?

Edit: Added tyre pressure issue pointed out by g4qber.

Check your tyre pressures
I run mine at 40 psi all round

Do people actually use the RR gauge as a meaningful guide?

On your regular trip (assuming you have one) is the SOC on the 16 bar dash meter in the same location as usual (after charging to 100% befor setting off). For example 5bars remaining after your usual trip.

My RR gauge shows everything from 150km to 70km after a full charge and everything in between.

+one for cold weather having a negative effect on range.

Kurt.

I use the RR all the time, seems really useful, so long as you are aware how it works.
I've heard running the heater causes a really dramatic reduction in range. Would the RR take that into account (higher drain during recent use with the heater on?). The Air con seems to be added in separately, instantly drops 10% when you turn it on.

My answer is your car made a calculation of it's actual capacity, and now it calculates the RR, assuming a new capacity (significantly less then the last one)- My car done a similar thing, going from 150 km to 120 km (something like that, I really don't know the exact numbers) from a day to another.

Hi Greg, no drop in RR on our iMiEV. It said 103km on Sunday 26th when it last got a charge (couldn't for 5 days prior due to storm damage to power infrastructure).
If you drive the same routes then RR should be helpful, otherwise its just a random number.
PS Just started my daughter's science experiment today to see how different tyre pressures and D/Eco/B etc effects Wh used on the school run. Looks like Canion bluetooth stopped working 4km short of destination so no meaningful result, grrr!

Greg, not sure if you ended up getting CanIon setup? If you havn't and think you can still make it to the meet on Saturday, I will have mine so we can look at the battery and see if any of the cells are playing up?

Yes sorry Sunday. Are you still thinking you can come, and is Michael planning to come?

CanIon locks up if you put the time (1min, 5min, 30min etc) setting too high. Put it back to 30mins or less and it seems to run fine on my Galaxy Tab2.
