sounds like a torque wrench

Post by g4qber » Sun, 05 Jan 2014, 16:47

after releasing the park brake
and travelling forward out of the driveway; I reverse park into the carport

about 15 secs later there is a whir like a torque wrench
I wonder what this could be?

this has been from day one I believe, but haven't really noted it down till now.

I noticed that twang sound from the ear of the car to. I think it has somthing to do with the ABS or traction control (perhaps it resets or recalibrate it self)?I am just guessing this as it sounds very similar to the noise you hear when traction control kicks in when you have to much throttle around a tight corner.

according to daryl:
"the noise from the back just after you start off is the brake booster pressurising,"

Nope. Brake booster is pressurized at vehicle power on. As it would want to be otherwise there would be no brake assist to start with. If it comes on a second time shortly after starting off then that would be because you have been using the brakes.

The abs unit fibrilates once the vehicle is moving forward. That sound comes from the front left of vehicle where the abs unit is located. As Kurt suggests, some form of ABS calibration perhaps. Actually, the old discovery (ABS,TCS,ACE) did a similar shuffle.

Both are sounds you wouldn't normally notice on an ICE particularly a diesel as they sometimes have electric vac pumps.

Ya it's just the self-test for the antilock braking system....

Well covered here, we all have it.
