I'm also looking at importing a Nissan Leaf (24kW or 30Kw).

What I've learned (so far):

From April 2013 are the better 24Kw versions (80kg lighter etc.).

Lack of battery management is an issue, depending on:
- how hot the climate is
- how many times you fast charge the battery (increases the heat)

I'd only be looking at cars with a minimum battery capacity of 10.

Importers to choose from:
J-Spec (complied in Melbourne and shipped to Perth). They have the best website and information on models and auctions, by far.
Iron Chef Imports (complied in Perth via Fabcar)
Prestige Motorsport (complied in Melbourne and shipped to Perth). Based in Perth.

Decent April 2013 onwards 24Kw Leaf's can be imported from $15k. 2014 onwards 30Kw from $25k.

Fabcar (East Perth) and Elite (Wangara) import and sell Leaf's locally. Some of Fabcars' are 8 or 9 bars of battery capacity (from the original 12 bars). Elite only have one Leaf atm, a 30Kw for $33k. It's nice, but you can import the same for $25 - $28k.

Fabcar replace the HU with an Android HU. This would be ok for 'S' models, but 'X' and 'G' models lose climate control and battery charging information, so is best to either leave in Japanese, or convert to English.

Prestige have the HU converted to English while being complied in Melbourne, for $650. Iron Chef just leave the original unit in (say their customers don't have an issue with it being Japanese).

Elite take out the HU and send it to Melbourne to get converted. Takes about 2 weeks.

Fabcar include an Aus spec charging cable.

It is (apparently) possible to replace the Leaf battery with any other Leaf battery (whichever version), by adding some sort of device between the battery and the ECU (?).

What are the best insurers in Perth for Leaf?

What's your opinions on the Leaf battery's?

I'd be happy to facilitate any battery swaps if folks are going to do that. Got a hoist, workshop etc.

Drove back from the compliance workshop, 60 kms in all and still showed 70 kms range. This is an X with a heap of extras to the point that it is a G minus the solar panel if that makes sense. 16,700 on clock now and it is a 2014 cost me less than 1% over my budget of $20k on the road drive away and that included a partial conversion to English, granny charger conversion leaving me the Bose sound system to figure out today. Found it had a dash cam too but getting that going might be fun without instructions.

So... this old thread hey. My JDM 2017 ZE1 G spec is hopping on a boat in a day or two to come to Australia (ETA 5th Feb). Bought it through Jspec at auction. And at a great price too, we're looking at ~$31.7 + rego. Bonus leather seats! 40,000km? Picked a nice dark blue which was never available here: "You can have white... or white... or wait 6+months for a UK import if you want dark grey or silver, oh and it's $53k" lol.

From taking out the loan in Sept 2020 to winning the auction late Nov, to getting the car in March will be about 6 months. Feels like foooooorever. Sigh.

Vectrix was my gateway drug. Nissan Leaf is how I corrupt the wife with EV torque. And one day many years from now... when they sort their quality control out we'll probably end up with a Model Y as the primary family car. In the mean time that'll be the 2014 Outlander we've had for a few years. It's a great economy ICE that fits the kids (6ft+) and does long distance travel. But the Leaf will take over all the short city stuff. Even if we don't get any solar into the battery, we'll be saving ~$150/mth in fuel just on the wife going to work and back on mains power. Obviously we'll do more trips than that and also try and charge more on the weekend to maximize the solar usage. The loan was $420/mth (house equity) and with the recent low fixed rates we saved $320/mth on the main mortgage. So... free car? Haha.
