Well I was having a look around and the biggest RC BLDC and came across these 2:

hehe i have a 1208mm hex-a-copter that swings 18" CF props and can lift just short of 14Kg of payload and its just a toy hahaha

Hex = 6 motors and 1208mm is the distance between opposite motor shafts

Just out of interest how long(minutes) will it fly unloaded and with what size battery?

38 min with 2 x 6S 5600mah (22V 5.6Ah) and i get hot motors and flat battery's in just over 3 min at carrying full load and i dont do that often because it hurts my unit BIG time

Why couldn't this be used in a small car... ~1100kg... 50kw is enough to get it going, maybe not fast...

Is it lacking in some other way? Really low continuous rating? No Torque?

No mention of RPM range... so maybe it'd need a gearbox.

I'm looking for CHEAP alternatives for a small car conversion. 80kph, 50km range would be fine.

50kw is plenty for a commuter. My daily drive can be held down to 30kw if I'm careful - mainly used on 80km/h hills. RPM is your bigger issue as you have indicated. Keep in mind that they are force cooled in their native application.

Yep so a few problems.
1. It's an outrunner so a Big coffee tin spinning around in you engine bay.
2. Typical RPM is usually most ICE's peak so will need a good hi-revving gearbox (thin oil).
3. Airflow issues as suggested above FAN Power->RPM^2 vs High stall current on vehicle
4. Probably over rated power for selling so may never get 50kW.

I did put them up there as a comparison as my Handi only had 40kW so quite plausible use on a car.
But no one really twigged until now...

So 50kW will be FAST but not QUICK.
You should be able to do over 100kph.

To me it didn't really seem that good a value.
The Motenergy motors would probably be more durable for the price.

Oh and their unknown/untested so you'd be own your own.
It would be an $1800 gamble.

Don't use the smaller one (35kW) as it has no internal phase sensors.
At least with the bigger motor you could replace the controller with something common.

Yeah I found that the RPM ranges up to 10k, which means in practice I'd need a 2:1 gear box or similar.

The Motenergy motors would probably be more durable for the price.

Most of their stuff is really low power, more suited to a motorbike than a car. Best I could find was the ME1616 (20kw cont, 55kw peak). Is there a higher power Motenergy motor?

I guess the ME1304 has a slightly higher continuous rating for $100USD less...

Could one of those be used direct drive? The car I have (dying ICE engine) has an auto transmission, so I'd like to just rip that out completely for weight and complexity reduction.

Yes I'm aware of that. And a lot of patience and random other little bits...

No I don't think any of these above are suitable for direct drive.
You really need 2-3 times the torque of the original ICE to go direct drive.
This is where the series DC motors are better suited.

20kW continuous will easily get you past 80kph.
Probably over 100kph.
