Need help.
Hello to there everyone.
I need some help deciding on the drive system of the bike I'm building.
I'm at the stage of purchase the motors and am stuck between hub and regular.
I have found some 10&8kw continuous brushless hub motors but am also looking at twin mars ME0913 motors.
While hub means more room in bike and ultra simple build it also means more weight unsprung.
The mars motors do kill space in the bike but have a higher power.
The bike is a cruiser not unlike a low riding chopper
310 wide wheel at the back and 160 front so it's a biggin.
Weight anywhere in the 300kg is normal for a bike like this.
I see my tail and I can not stop chasing it!!!!
Please people slap me hard and point me in a direction!!!

A 300 kg bike and a pair of Mars motors is not a good combination. It will move it, but you might be disappointed. Managing a pair of motors is more than twice the trouble of managing one big motor.
Trouble is, there's nothing in the 20-40 kW single motor region ideally suited to bikes. You could try an AC20 induction motor?

Usually the hub motors are a generic fit.
So don't quite fit, don't quite look right and as you say have limited power.
I agree twin motors is asking for trouble - unless your sticking a chain to each side of the wheel

Regen from AC is not much use on a rear wheel bike anyway.

Supposedly the AC-20 "is a very popular choice for motorbikes".

Still you'd have to wonder if an extra $2.5k for AC is worth the marginal benefit over the DC 6.75" system.

I did check that out...
Even the AC50 dose not have the same power as 2 ME0913s and the two are lighter.
And while 6.75" is nice for postie... If I go DC no less than 9" if I go DC I go it hard

That's the power of permanent magnets for you. PMAC has it over induction when it comes to hard throttle use. But for cruising they are on par.
It's just that managing a pair of motors is trouble with a capital F. Two controllers? Lots of space used up for something that could have been a single motor of more power? It's a tough call I know.
You can always try an AFM130

So what your saying is you want about 60kW?
Even tho a car twice as heavy only has 40kW.
Are you sure you want this for "Cruising"?
Dual ME0913 are 32kg which is about 3kW 100-frame for industrial stuff.
Which would mean spinning upto 7500RPM for a peak and 9000RPM max.
Sounds a bit unlikley for that at this stage.
How about using the two ME0913 each with a seperate "primary" chain/belt to a common shaft which then has the main chain run to the wheel.
At this stage it would be cheaper than the AC50.
Assuming you can get a controller (or two) for the ME0913.
I see evworks has controllers for it listed as "coming soon".

Ok after much research I find that the two ME0915s will do just fine.
Example
My Suzuki 1500 intruder had 67hp 115nm and weighed 315kgs
Twist throttle and try not to slide back over seat....
The two mars motors have the same sort of power but geared 2.2:1 give an increase in torque over the Suzuki so I think I'm on the right track
