Hi Guys,

A fellow in Melbourne has two whole Vectrix batteries (2 x 102 x 30Ah Nimh prismatics and interconnects)

free to a good home

If no one takes them, I'll get them shipped over to Perth

These could make a small solar electric system perhaps. 40 x 1.2 = 48, so from the 204 cells you could make a 40S5P pack at 48 V and 150 Ah (7.2 kWh).

The only hassle is the difficulty (and danger!) of charging NiMh batteries. You can't use a charger (such as the one built into the PIP-4048 inverter) designed for lead acid; you need a special NiMh algorithm, possibly involving a temperature sensor.

For someone willing to deal with this issue, the price is good. Cells that are too tired to operate an electric vehicle, with its high peak current demand, are likely quite capable of running a solar electric system for a decade or more, where the current peak demand is well under 1C (150 A for this pack, configured as 5P).

I have another set of the same NiMh batteries from my Vectrix if anyone would like them.

Vectrix range was reduced to about 30% of original after 10,000km so not sure what condition the cells are in.

I'm based in Wahroonga in Sydney.

WhAt is the max charge rate for these type of NiMH cells?

Would need per cell temp sensing on 1.2v cells which gets expensive.

Now i meed a freeish say mx6....
Edit- need awd say subaru awd or small suv.
Honda hrv. Nissan xtrail. Rav

Or ... Little van like estima with hybrid.

paralleling and charging to full is indeed problematic
actually charging to full is problematic in general, you basically can't do it unless the battery is rather cold

If I were to do it, I would only charge to max 80% full - that way you are still in the linear zone and can get away with wiring in parallel.

also, don't go below 35% and you are very unlikely to reverse a cell

Usually it's only a few bad cells - at only 10'000km most of the cells are likely still above 25Ah in capacity
It's testing them that's the real PITA

Shipping a Vectrix battery from SYD or Melb to Perth is only $50, so if you are keen to get rid of them, and no local takers, I'm happy to take them.

If you go above 6A continuous you have heat problems
regen up to 80A seems fine though

I was thinking these cells have leakage issues so solar storage for weeks would be ineffecient but peak levelling could be a goer for standstill application.

But as a pack to try hybridev

Hi guys,

I am the fellow with the batteries, good to see some interest.

As Matt mentioned testing cells is a lot of work and something we never got past, although one of the batteries has never been used (taken from an unused Vectrix for lithium conversion).

I really like the idea that they could be used for a solar electric off grid setup but I could never get my head around the testing and charging.

Feel free to reply here or pm me and I will try give as much information as I can.

Another note is that a friend took a few cells and was trying to organise an off grid storage solution but ran in to the same problems as me, so the lot is just shy of two full batteries. Maybe 8 or 10 cells short.
