The racers are usually easier to convert. The racing spectators are the hardest, as they will have to make a conscious effort to understand and embrace the new technology. Racers just look at the lap times and decide if they want to throw a leg over it (or hop in the cockpit).

Nice work mate, and I will be hitting you up for an inverter soon!

You are right. A lot of people associate sound (noise) with speed.

After seeing our electric car run, one of my guys watched one of the gas powered Radicals scream past at about 210km/h and said "Wow....sounds like it should be going heaps faster than it is" :-)

People expecting no sound yesterday were well impressed with the jet-turbine sound that this drive system makes. They couldn't get enough of it. Too bad the pack ran out...

I can just imagine what a whole pack of electric racecars would sound like. It's enough to make me light headed ;-)

Looks fantastic.
I can usually hear the cars at Eastern Creek from where I live.
Don't think I'll hear this one though Image
Will you be there on the weekend?

The car is scheduled to be doing some demonstration laps at the Shannon's National Race Event at Eastern Creek on the Sunday morning of next weekend.

We have a well known race driver lined up to drive the car at and set/break the electric lap record at the track. I think the schedule is practice before 9:00am and then the laps at around 9:50am.

Should be well worth a look.

One of the motivations that has kept me going when building the car is to hear it at full-noise down the straight at Eastern Creek as I knew it would sound like a jet-turbine. I haven't had the chance yet as I have been in the car the whole time. I can't wait. :-)

Cheers,
Sutho

Fantastic project Sutho, the photos and videos are serious techpr0n.

Wondering what's the estimated range at full race speed?

The pack was sized to enable the car to complete a 20min sprint race (about 50km) at high speed with some power in reserve.

I'm yet to find out if it will hold up, but based on the first tests run, my early opinion is that it could be a little light on....but will know soon enough.

Cheers,
Sutho

<The endurance race is about 20mins - last year it was a 40deg day>

What was the 20min endurance race called and where held?

Thanks
Wayne

I'm not sure what you are quoting, but this car is designed for high speed circuit racing, not endurance racing.

Maybe you are thinking of the Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival which incorporates some endurance races for bikes and smaller EVs on the Cameron Park Go-Kart track near Newcastle?

Sutho

was quoting Stiive, 13th June earlier in this thread. I didn't think Hunter EV festival had any races for fully fledged race cars and is unusual to call a 20min race an enduro, hence interested to find out what he was referring to.

Ah, that is the Formula SAE competition in Werribee (Melbourne), in December.

Sutho, any more pics of the car without the body? Closeups of your fine engineering work please Image

Here is a video of the car on the dyno without the body on. This was running at 80% power. We are putting it back on the dyno today and will run at full power. Image

Some footage of our electric Radical on the track at Eastern Creek yesterday for more testing.

All cars were on cold tyres and not pushing it. But even so, it's becoming apparent that the torque of the electric drive system gives this car a distinct advantage out of the corners and when overtaking...
