Hi,
I enjoyed the latest installment. Thanks! One comment: Are you really planning to rely only on the circuit breaker with no fuse? I would have thought it sensible to have at least one fuse with a rating a bit higher than the breaker. If the breaker fails, or the short is somewhere before the breaker, at least the fuse should blow.
I have the same breaker but intend to put in two fuses, probably at 1/3 and 2/3 of the way through the battery pack, as a safety feature of last resort. I don't expect them to ever blow since under normal use the breaker should trip first and the controller should limit the current so the breaker doesn't trip.
At least that is my thinking at this stage.
Peter.

Hey Peter, it will probably feature in an upcoming episode, but the breaker switch has a choke cable connected to it to manually trip it as well.

Hmmm. I'm not sure I'd be happy with that. I would like a fuse at the back to blow if the front end is a mangled wreck, shorts have happened that bypass the breaker, and I am not in a fit state to remember to pull the choke cable anyway. Others who have given more thought to the safety issues might be better to comment than I. Still, great, inspiring video!

I believe it was Zeva (I stand corrected if it wasn’t) who was kind enough to provide gratis a crash sensor to take care of that issue. So in total he has a crash sensor which will kill the contactor in the event of a crash, a dirty great big breaker to trip in the event of a short, a sturdy cable to pull on in the event that the breaker doesn’t trip itself, and a battery pack isolation switch in case the breaker fails, and of course the ignition key which also cuts the contactor.

Hey all, yeah...it's been a while coming....
I'll be on TEN news tomorrow at 5pm (Wednesday 20th May 2009) with the EV Capri. A reporter I met at the Green Car initiative earlier this year has kept in touch, and we just finished shooting the story for the news!

I plan to put the story up on evcapri.com as soon as they send me a copy - or - you could see it 'live' at 5....ImageImageImage

It's also on at 5 tonight. I'll put a 'proper' version up on the site when I get one...

I just saw it on the telly. It was a great job, Kearon! Hopefully it's on the 5pm news as well, which has many more viewers. Usually the 5pm and late night news are just clones of the early news presentations, so it should be.

Was it an ad for Kogan?

:)

Well done Kearon!

A heads up - your link isn't to Nathan's website.

The correct address is http://www.converturcar.com/ not http://www.convertyourcar.com/

*Thread Necromancy*

I saw it! I saw the Today Tonight story. Looks like they cut you off finishing saying "2500 charges, which is xxxkm for xxx dollars", or whatever you were saying. But a great story!
