Divorce your Car! Interesting reading

I thought this book is an interesting read.
Divorce Your Car!: Ending the love affair with the automobile by Katie Alvord
Only got to page 34 so far..

Some choice quotes:

"Traffic jams became "the norm" by 1912"

"early auto magazines admitted motorists were obsessed with speed"

"They were noisy and smelly, and they frightened the animals."
William Durant - founder of General Motors.

"by 1927 there was one car for every 5.3 US residents"
New Zealand - 10.5 people per car
Canada      - 10.7
Australia   - 16

Divorce your Car! Interesting reading

I couldn't give up my car completely, but lately I have been riding my bike down to the shops for little things. The baby's trailer is great for a few bags of stuff, but anything more than that is too much.

Of course I'm far from fit (though I want to do that burswood to joondalup freeway ride this year), so the 42km to work and back is much too far, so car it is.

And of course 42km isn't too far for an EV :P
I'll drive an electric vehicle one day.

Divorce my car? No chance. I'm just converting my love to electric. Image
Here's a video clip of the original Queen song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdDNFJpil50&NR=1

Now we perform an electric conversion on the song, by replacing the infernal combustion parts:

                            Electric
I'm In Love With My ^ Car
--------------------------------
Words and music by Roger Taylor of Queen (except *)

The machine of a dream
Such a clean machine
With electrons a pumpin'             * (was: With pistons a pumpin')
And the hub caps all gleam

When I'm holdin' your wheel
All I hear is your gear
When my hands on your grease gun
Oh it's like a disease son

I'm in love with my car
Gotta feel for my automobile
Get a grip on my boy racer rollbar
Such a thrill when your radials squeal

Told my girl I'll have to forget her
Rather buy me more volts to go better * (was: buy me a new carburettor)
So she made tracks sayin'
This is the end now
Cars don't talk back
They're just four wheeled friends now

When I'm holdin' your wheel
All I hear is your gear
When I'm cruisin' in overdrive
Don't have to listen to no run of the mill talk jive

I'm in love with my car
Gotta feel for my automobile
I'm in love with my car
String back gloves in my automolove

The "on" switch is much easier to find and operate on the car. Image
....and they don't easily offend either. Image
Weather you think you can, or you think you can't, you will usually end up being right.
