SA Government to push for EV RUC.

Post by jonescg »

Just got word the SA government is going to try and pass it's EV-specific road user charges next week, so they will be piling the pressure on the cross-benchers.

AEVA's position has always been, if you're going to do road user charging, do it properly or don't do it at all.

Doing it properly means applying the RUC to all road-going vehicles, not just EVs. The charge should be multiplied by vehicle mass to account for the proportion of damage they do to public infrastructure, and so that excessively large vehicles are discouraged. It means re-investing the proceeds into transport and mobility, through better public transport, rail freight, cycling and better city planning, not just more and ever-wider roads. And crucially, it means penalizing the use of petrol and diesel vehicles due to the heavy health burden they create through leaving the fuel excise in place.

If you're not going to do it properly, then don't do it at all.

Get writing to your MP and to the SA treasurer!
