2012 ITC Global eV Challenge

Post by roddilkes » Fri, 19 Oct 2012, 17:39

ITC Global EV Challenge, Perth WA October 27th.

Around 24 teams will bring out their Electric cars for the ITC Global 2012 EV Challenge in Perth, Western Australia next Saturday, 27th October.

As one of a handful of electric car races around the world, this is a rare opportunity to see grass roots electric sport in its infancy.   As one of cleanest and greenest car races on the planet, competitors will race for one hour on around 10cents of electricity to complete the most laps of the RAC Perth Driver Training Centre.

The race brings together a diverse range of schools, colleges, universities and private entrants showcasing a range of electric vehicle technologies ranging from lead acid batteries in the Yuassa class to the latest lithium polymer batteries and brushless DC motors in the open classes.

Last years winners, River Raiders have built two new cars for the 2012 event and are hoping to make a significant improvement on their 2011 lap times. Wayne Prangnell from River Raiders said "This race is a modern take on hill trolley racing. Its all about efficiency."

The technology and the race is becoming more relevant with growing interest in the range of electric vehicles. "This is an electric vehicle range race" Wayne said.

River Raiders will have Roadbot 3 (Three Wheels) and Roadbot 4 (Four Wheels) electric cars.

Well done to Rod, Wayne and Jamie for back to back eV Challenge wins. Well done guys, the cars looked great, and we'll try and catch you next year.

A couple of photos of our cars from this year's event...

The wooden car, creatively called Woody, won the design prize from ECU. We obviously ran out of time to finish it off before the race. It'll look better next race!

Well Done again to the River Raiders, that makes it three consecutive wins. You are looking like Audi in the World Endurance Series. Will definitely source our batteries from you next year after the disappointment this year. Hope to hear more about starting an electrathon series as well as next years eV Challenge builds. If you haven't already, you can like us "Coulomb Motorsport" on FB for regular updates. We are still compiling a video with footage from the race but here is a link to one of our testing videos.

All the best with planning for next year and hope to hear from you all soon.

James and Peter Hill

You did 58 km/h on a 32 volt battery? Nice work!!

We found out our rear tyre bulged, thus the noise. We might rename the car squeaker for next year...

Anybody still interested in doing the electrathon series next year? If so let me know as I am starting our build according to the US Rules...

Can the Perth AEVA Go-Kart be included? Only 117 V top of charge, 2 kWh onboard? :D

I just noted that the ev challenge website - www.evchallenge.org.au - has posted that River Raiders did NOT win overall this year - SKM did. I think they might have got caught out by the dual race format and awarded the win to the wrong team!

Unlucky Rod, well done SKM...
