There will be a XPrize Ev Contest held in Newcastle later in the year.
Time to dust off those old electrathon cars it looks like we have a race again on the East coast.

A draft of the Hunter Valley EV X-Prize rules and regulations will be made available on this website shortly. The X-Prize will target the development of high performance, energy efficient and low cost electric vehicles. Student and open divisions will be held with winners decided based on number of laps achieved at greater than a set miniumum speed.

The rules are nearly finished the track has been picked .

Rumor has it the only limiting factor will be a $200 accumulator for single seat vehicle and $400 for a two seat.
That’s bike or car from what I gather.
Vehicle must be able to achieve 40kph and average 30kph laps.
I’m told the first 20 teams will have free entry!

So if you can build the F1 flywheel Kintetic energy recovery system (KERS) for $200 you win! Image

Still to be registered for road use would eliminate a few applications.
And the 1-2 seater sort of contradicts the ROV aspect of the vehicle design compliance unless they plan to put train tracks on the track?!?

Wierd rules. Max $200 battery pack for single seaters, $400 for 2 seaters - kinda rules out LiPO and means you'll need to use SLA. Minimum top speed of 40km/h is fine, but a minimum 1.2m high eyeline? That means your eyeline will be higher than that of a car like a Caterham/Westfield or even a Lotus! In comparison with our eV Challenge vehicles our eyeline will need to be roughly twice as high with a narrower maximum vehicle width. Handling could be "interesting" to say the least and good luck finding a good aerodynamic solution with that brick wall to shape the air around.

And i agree with Richo about the questionable rules in regard to the car having to meet regulations for road registerable vehicles or else not exceed 40km/h.

It seems to be set up for bikes , so schools can enter easly.

maybe it's meant to be a max 1.2m eyeline?

Pretty much every electrathon vehicle is out of the running if it's minimum 1.2m

I've sent an EOI, and should be able to field a "demonstration class" motorbike, and a single seater vehicle.

My reading of the rules tells me it's a minimum 1.2m eyeline. The definition for the single seater says "...The basic vehicle design is for a narrow track, single person vehicle..." and that tells me that they are looking at a 3/4 wheeler. Why mention track at all for a bike?

Saying that the 1.2m eyeline would make more sense for a bike... Like I said earlier, wierd rules. If they want bikes mention bikes. If they want both bikes and cars (3/4 wheeled machines) then why the high eyeline?

Regarding the road rego.
Doesn't this put in the same sort of class as the "TREV"?
Is this what they are expecting the average punter to make?

Am I reading the same rules I interpret the rules as this option 1 build a single seat electric bike or a car with a eye height of 1.2m with a battery pack cost no more than $200 that can average at least 30kph around a go kart track.
Option 2 same as option 1 but with two seats and a battery cost no more than $400.

Or if you want you can bring other EVs for display but must have Rego or meet safety requirements stated.

Hunter EV Festival launch a success

The launch of the Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival at Lambton High today was a great success. 2NURFM and ABC radio interviewed Professor Tim Roberts and covered the event regularly throughout the day.

Thanks must go to Peter Beach for organising and hosting the event at Lambton High and thank you Newcastle MP Tim Owen for officially launching the festival.

The highlight of the event for all was definitely seeing Jon Eggenhuizen’s record holding electric motorcycle and hearing from himself and his race rider Jason, about the technical specs and skills required to build and race a winning electric vehicle.

What a fantastic event, very well organised! I really enjoyed both the display day and the race day.

I was competing as "Grinmore Pedaless", and took 1st place in the Open division (seems today's Newcastle Herald only mentioned the Schools EV Prize Image ).

It was a great event the best effort was by Belmont Christian College Team No 1 they achieved over 61km over 2hrs on 18ah 36v lead acid.
