200mph what to use AC or DC??
Not sure where you saw that, but possibly because they over geared it for the top end, and they need someting to get in going maybe?

That thinking is correct for ICE vehicles, but with a DC motor the max torque is at slow speeds from standing - at any gearing.
I realise now that it was "The Spog" who is using the separate motor for acceleration - my bad.
