Repurposing hybrid batteries for a full BEV

Post by Clay Tortoise »

Anybody had any success using hybrid batteries (prius/camry/ct200h/insight) to build a pack for a full BEV? Thinking of something small and cheap for testing purposes, only need 100V but they all tend to be 200V+

Matt @antiscab has a stack of them I think. They will be fine for testing, but you might find they are too heavy and bulky to be much use.

I do have heaps of nimh 7.2v 6.5Ah sticks from nhw10 prius. They're all 25years old though

with nimh, putting them in parrallel is difficult as their voltage drops as they approach full charge.

I'm based in WA, and the sticks are easy enough to ship

If you can find a Prius traction battery at a wreckers, it isn't difficult to swap the cells around to increase the capacity while dropping the voltage. But you might be better off getting the cells from Matt because he will know what cells are worth the effort and which cells are just paper weights

Most of mine the capacity is okay, but the difference in self discharge is not. that's mainly why they're not usable in a hybrid and sitting in my shed

I haven't capacity tested in a long time.

If you're local I'm happy to just give them to you

Thanks guys
I was thinking of just using them for testing.
Thanks Matt, unfortunately I'm not local. (Brisbane)
