Tc chargers dont like me. I have killed it.

Post by Dan007a » Wed, 25 Sep 2019, 10:40

Pulled the thunderstruck charger out because I increased pack to 45 cells and could not get putty app to load up to raise voltage, believe usb cable to blame.
Had a tc 1500 144v charger here. Ran through a few charge cycles. Getting used to being a ev driver and my hard work with my project. Then on restart the next day, no led on the charger.
Ac is on but nothing on the dc side.
No burns inside..
Waiting for a new cable for the evcc..

Boom as in small explosion or boom as in that was a sudden and unexpected event?

I don't think these chargers are easily serviced, but it could be that an internal overcurrent device has tripped. Or a fuse on the AC side has blown internally? No LEDs all together, whether plugged into a batter on the DC side or a socket on the AC side would suggest it's not getting power from the getgo.

There's an LED on both sides of the charger (the second can only be viewed with the cover off.

Are both not flashing?

no possibility of battery voltage finding it's way to the enable line? (I use a 5k resistor on each line to protect against that happening, for a 144v nominal system)

There's a number of TC Charger repair threads from a few years ago which explored various failure modes.
From memory there is a low risk of disconnecting the charger on the mains side at full power, if you're unlucky enough to do so at the top of the sine wave, when the ac current is highest, and the inductive kick back pushes the hv dc bus caps too high and causes the PFC front end gate to fail on.

Killed a 72v charger by doing just that. Ac relay is clicking on but no dc output . Only see battery voltage on any terminal. Dc fuse is good have tested the fuse on the board and also via tc method . Im thinking if i have read it correctly on the mention treads. It may be the enable line. As i had the green wire blowing the wind for a few cycles (no bare wire) so maybe it made contact with a power source

If you want to have a go at repairing the TC charger, or just see how much is involved, see for example this topic :

This is an emergency copy I made when diyelectriccar.com seemed to be imploding, but it's since stabilised, and the diy topic will be more up to date.
