Can I use this in a motor bike?
Hi all I am new to the whole EV scene I am looking to build a EV motard I have a short comute less than 20km round trip to work 5 days a week looking torque and fun while blasting to work
any ideas? I am looking to go down the road of getting a basket case ICE bike and modding it to be a EV in QLD (I live in Mount Isa)

Hi. It seems a bit large for a bike - depends on the size of the bike, I initially considered it for a small car. Have a look at the conversions on www.evalbum.com (if you haven't already) and see if there is a trend there. Use the search tab at the top to limit it to bikes.

I presently have two customers in the USA who are undertaking electric motorcycle conversions. These guys are quite experienced with EV's. They are using my 20C discharge BMI cells with a Perm pancake motor. The information they sent me on the motor they have selected is here-

It looks like a good size motor for a motorbike project with heaps of power.
I would be happy to forward you info on the progress of their projects. They will be sending me photos during their builds.
I also have a customer in europe who is building the world's fastest e-bike. This bike has a top sped of 90kph. Pretty scary really considering this is a bicycle and not a motorbike!

I have an A91-4003 which I'm about to test out for possible use in my bike.
From what I've experienced and seen, I think the Perm motor is probably one of the best for the job, but they're not cheap.
I'm looking at using a gearbox too, because to get a high enough top speed with direct drive, you need massive current to get your take off torque - which reduces efficiency quite a lot.

I have just got a perm motor for a bike they are not cheap but you get what you pay for
Am going to stick it in a gocart before i do the bike
I am also looking at building a two speed gearbox for the bike with a 5:1 and 1:1 giving 0 - 60, 0 - 120 km
originally wanted to use a planetary gearbox but will end up being a conventional type dog box.

I would build one from scratch to suit the application
it would slide over the motor shaft

the output shaft would come 100mm or so back which makes the sprocket in a better position
would make this shaft to suit a standard motorcycle sprocket
would possibly make the gears interchangable to begin with to change ratios in the box.

I think you'd probably only need 2 or 3:1 reduction in the low gear if you're using a normal bike sprocket setup for the final drive.

This motor is a good choice for a bike.
Compact, lightweight with easy DC control.
You could do direct chain drive as it is fairly torquey.
One of the WAEVA members has one in a baby car and it goes like the clappers.
No regen braking though.
Michael (Doc) Symons is the one to talk to about these motors, he has been using and selling them for 20 years.

In 7.5kW there are CMG, ABB, Trojan and probably WEG - all aluminium frame. In 11kW there is ABB (59kg) and Trojan (67kg).
Google CMG Motors and follow links to aluminium frame. On ABB web site it gets a little involved but specs are all there. Post if you can't find them and I'll delve further. Google Trojan Motors for theirs. There are also 5 or 5.5kW which may be sufficient - some have 3.5 pullout torque which get close to the 7.5kW.
