A123 Systems in Bankruptcy...

Article from /.

"A Twisted Clean-Tech Tale: How A123 Wound Up In Bankruptcy"
Posted by timothy on Thursday December 06, @12:10PM
from the fallacies-on-display dept.

curtwoodward writes "Advanced battery maker A123 Systems was supposed to be one of the marquee names of the U.S. cleantech manufacturing scene —

it won hundreds of millions in federal grants,
had operations around the globe, and
supplied the luxury Fisker electric car.

In 2009, as the economy sputtered, A123 registered
the country's biggest IPO.

Today, it's in bankruptcy court, with possible buyers submitting bids for its parts and pieces.

How'd A123 fall so far, so fast?

As losses mounted, its reliance on just two big customers came back to haunt the company — and a series of screw-ups at a Michigan plant delivered the final blow."

It has been coming for a while. Even their blue collar workers knew it was coming and posted comments online months ago.

Indeed. When a company with a good product refuses to sell to the general public, they risk something like this happening. If Joe Shmoe has a battery failure in his DIY conversion, would he sue A123? For what? Surely less than the cost of billions in lost sales!

Someone likened the A123 story to that of the Wright brothers. They made one good invention and spent all of their money fighting others in court till they died poor.

Their business model was certainly flawed.

That's a real shame, but yeah, their customer restrictions certainly didn't help. They had amazing products, and even went so far as to sponsor Killacycle and others, but to what end if they wouldn't sell to the people they were advertising to?

While doubtful, wouldn't it be nice if large lots of their cells went up for auction and sold dirt cheap like the AZD stuff ;-) Wishful thinking, for sure.

Or maybe from their Chinese "partners"?

(I don't vouch for the veracity of these cells, but the ones in the picture do look a lot like the real McCoy!!)

This is the sort of thing getting a group buy would help.
One pack they would turn a nose up at but if say ten of us wanted a pack I'm sure they might rethink and try make some money

If Fisker can't get packs from A123 at the moment, I don't think our chances are good.

Just be careful they don't fill that container with the sh*ttiest cells from the F-grade pile, with a few genuine articles on top.

A123 has changed its name to B456... seriously.

Once things get sorted out with the transition through bankruptcy, I wonder if the new owners will (finally) start offering products to the DIY community. Thoughts?

But the background was....

“After its bankruptcy sale to Chinese auto supplier Wanxiang Group, battery-maker A123 Systems Inc. was required to change its name as part of its agreement.”

Clever choice of names!

Should have added this....

Their website has a nice PDF summary page on various battery technologies:
