Toyota Prius as an emergency power source

Post by IVI »

Someone asked if their Prius could serve as self-charging battery supply for their Amateur Radio Station; a Toyota Prius tech chimes in with info, along the way.

From a US forum for Radio Amateurs, et al.:

The inventor of APRS (Amateur Packet/Position Reporting System)
has reportedly found a way to run his radios from his Prius.

(I don't think the idea would work for a 100% battery driven Prius.)

Running an inverter off the 12 V battery of a vehicle is hardly revolutionary. However, it is handy that the Prii with IC engines will automatically turn into generators for you (but I think you have to have them in Ready mode, i.e. with keyswitch on, effectively, for the engine to come on).

It would, if there were such a thing, and you have way more electrical capacity in the high voltage pack, but of course you take away energy that you might need to drive home.

As far as I know, there aren't any fully electric Prii available anywhere yet (I think some are planned), and I haven't seen any plug-in Prii in Australia so far. But you could do the same thing with a Leaf or iMiEV, or any vehicle with a DC/DC (which includes almost all EV conversions).
