New EV in Gowrie Junction

Greg At the Brisbane AEVA meeting tomorrow night there will be a conversion successfully using the homemade controller you are considering, as well as possibly a conversion that has destroyed 2 of them before giving up. There will also be an excellent Honda City conversion that you can take for a dr...

New EV in Gowrie Junction

Greg
I suggest you attend the AEVA Brisbane branch meeting on Wednesday night. There are usually some members who have built the controller you mentioned, and also examples of Pb and Li powered cars. I believe the information you will gather will make the trip worthwhile.

The other point is to compare a cheap Industrial AC motor with a rewind to that of an off the shelf DC motor - The AC motor is still better value ($/kW) without even taking into account the added benefits of efficiency, regen and lack of brushes. To compare AC with DC, you should also take into acc...

Lead acid in 2012?

Have you considered flooded batteries? They provide greater range and longer life. Most 72V cars in Australia have used 12 x 6V golf cart batteries. You also have to be careful about which brand of battery that you use. One small Brisbane car got 18-20,000km from a set of Trojans, but only a few tho...

What car do you have?
Can you charge at work, or do you have to do a 30km round trip?
What speeds do you have to reach?
In what part of Brisbane will you be driving?
Have you attended the AEVA Brisbane branch meetings?

Yeah transmission in the back is a good idea but you have to be careful with the weight balance when using big battery packs all up front. My thoughts were to put the battery pack back where the engine and gearbox currently go. This would keep the weight reasonably central. There are no side pods o...

Batteries in side-pods and motor and gearbox in the usual place.

Or, use front wheel drive gearbox in the back of the car and put the batteries in the front and along the transmission tunnel.

I would suggest that many highly successful Pb acid EVs have been built in the past 100 years.

Making EVs commercially in AU: If not NOW, When?

It was pointed out to me the other night by a converted-car owner that he thought he had made an error in converting a relatively old honda. He said that he was holding a new car part and that he would not fit that part until the current part was totally unusable because he could no longer source t...

I'm grateful to our evil twins, Maxwell and Faraday, who visited today and took our MX-lightning for a drive. They said we have to fix that shudder, which might happen when the current limit kicks in; they nearly got stuck on a hill in front of a bus. Well, better them than us    http://forums.aeva...

Most EVs already have an onboard compressor (vacuum pump). With a couple of valves, hose and gauge, a "service station" is not required. Combined with a can of puncture repair spray, the spare tyre can be eliminated.
