Polytechnic West eV Challenge

Mine is known as "Angry Beaver II" - I have an infantile sense of humour - and was the all aluminium with unpainted nosecone car. Number 56 in 2009 and I can't remember my number in 2010. Has a canopy, uses a LiPO battery and an Etek. I'll try and find a photo and post it.

Polytechnic West eV Challenge

2011 race dates now up on the website. A new venue, RAC driving centre near the airport. Race date MONDAY Oct 24th. No new rules that I could see, and all entrants in 1 race on a 1.6km track that is 8m wide. That will be interesting to say the least... Anyway, hopefully a few more aeva crew will joi...

2010 eV Challenge

Well, I've had a chat with Alec and sorted out exactly where I was coming from, not sure about anyone else... Moving on, wondering if Richo or anyone else in AEVA land is planning on racing this year? I'll have my '09 car racing in the open class, I'm finishing off a car for class A2 with my nieces ...

News - finally the 2010 details and rules are up on the website. The organisers are cracking down on damaged cars and on accidents. Still no safety standards in terms of vehicle construction however...

Hope to see some of you there

2010 eV Challenge

Might still be worth coming down for a look. Like I said before I can see that due to the lack of change to the website in 18 months (barring the uploading of the 2009 results) I would be suprised if the TAFE continue supporting it. It's a great event but needs some direction. If TAFE end up droppin...

2010 eV Challenge

Yeah I have the race data from last year but no-one has got close your record of 2007 yet. My new car might have but unfortunately my younger drivers were a bit clumsy whiile passing backmarkers and we lost a lot of laps when they crashed - we still won but did not perform to our maximum. No idea wh...

2010 eV Challenge

A little movement on the website front. Last year's results are now up and the change in name I mentioned in an earlier post is correct - it is now the Polytechnic West eV Challenge. The site does not have dates for 2010 nor any rule changes for this year however. If anything changes I'll let everyo...

2010 eV Challenge

Got an email from the chairman today stating the registrations are open until the 19th of September. Cost is still $75 per car and the only rule changes will be that foot steering will be banned (i thought it was anyway but whatver...), cars cannot run with buckled wheels (how this will be policed w...

2010 eV Challenge

G'day all. I just found out from the chairman of the eV Challenge that the 2010 race is to be held on Saturday 23 October with the pre-race scrutineering and practice a week earlier. No word on rule changes etc. as the website has not been updated for about a year. Hopefully a few aeva racers might ...

Motorcycle Hub motor.

We use hub motors all the time in the eV Challenge, although on a much smaller scale. They have few parts to screw up the installation of and the install into the bike would take about five minutes, leaving you plenty of time to mount & set up batteries and the electrical wizardry. Interested to kno...

Perth eV Challenge 2009

Problem with a bike is that the seat position must be feet first and the seat can't be higher than 250mm off the ground. You also need to have sonething preventing the feet from touching the ground and from the wheels (according to the rules anyway - but a lot of cars don;t quite meet these last two...

Perth eV Challenge 2009

There are five different classes - A, A2, B, C and Yuasa. A, A2 and B are only for high school kids, but anyone could enter the other two. I've entered class C since 2005 and it would be awesome to see some fellow aeva competitors out there in 2010.

Although car sales reps don't try to sell 8 years worth of fuel with the vehicle at the time of purchase either. So I don't think that the intial price of an eV will ever look as attractive. Assume you do 20,000km a year in a car which burns 10L/100km and fuel costs $1.50/litre. That's $3k in fuel ...

True but the general public perception of electric cars is that they are oddities, science experiments driven by professors and computer nerds. They aren't, but that's the perception. And a VE has four doors, a boot, a bonnet, four wheels and in general layout is exactly the same as the VN or whatev...

However name me one 'normal' AND attractive ev that doesn't cost as much as a house? There's your market right there.

Maybe but is 3 better than 4 for a mainstream vehicle? No way. The Holden Cruze ad summed it up well when it said something along the lines of "it's fuel efficient, but doesn;t look like an experiement". That's what turns people off - strange looking cars that also claim to be fuel efficient/electri...

Yeah, gotcha now. The eV challenge has little if anything to do with road going vehicles - a bit like the solar challenge. They are designed with a very narrow role in mind. Road cars are not, and need to be considered normal to be successful. Three wheelers for road cars just don't cut it. I wouldn...

All our eV Challenge cars are 3 wheeled - 2 front and a single rear. They handle fine - all the weight over the rear wheels makes the handling somewhat neutral or with a little understeer. The real issue is will wierd looking three wheelers change the general populus' opinion that electric cars are ...

Perth eV Challenge 2009

That was our car. The Etek in the back I purchased back in 2004 and I've had school cars using Eteks since 2003 and no-one looked twice until this year. It cost me about $380 in '04 to buy and as we only run it at 12V it doesn't put out massive hp. The trick this year was that we ran a LiPO 12V 36Ah...

Perth eV Challenge 2009

It was a great event, maybe I'm saying that just becuase we went well. AEVA should set up a race for these things so we can get them out more than once a year.

Our little beast did well - have a look at the Margaret river team's Flickr page - just google ev challenge 2009 and it'll pop up for you.
