Re: Calculating Home Charging Costs

I've got a kWh meter on the car charging circuit in the switch board. However we have time of use metering, and solar, so it would still be impossible to know what the charging fees were. Do you factor in a percentage of the cost of the solar system? Any such figures are generally estimates, but for...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

I can't imagine it's not fixable, although they might have to phone a friend in Japan. It would also be silly for them to replace such an expensive part without fixing it.

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

Hmm, a different location?

I would have assumed the trouble codes were unique to their source and all ended up on the same data bus. But I've seen some diagrams showing another can bus in the imiev.

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

Replaced the snubber capacitors, put in a temporary fuse, put it all back together and into the car. Still have the warning lights on.

I wonder if we have another fault elsewhere or if we need to clear the error codes before it will attempt to charge?

Re: I-miev repair

For me it displayed $20 +$9 for Fastway courier delivery (may be cheaper on east coast?). However when one proceeds there is a "request a quote" screen rather than a "buy now" screen. The message says this is because they don't have a weight for the part to calculate accurate shipping. I've requeste...

Yeah, I wouldn't have thought a paper version existed. And when I happened to get an electronic copy it wanted to run in Internet Explorer version 6.

Maybe they should use http://mmc-manuals.ru/Mitsubishi_i-MiEV ... ce_Manuals!

Re: Dcdc converter died maybe?

It's a common symptom of a failure in the charger/DC-DC unit. Sometimes just the fuse goes, but an increasing number of imiev's are seeing burnt out capacitors within the charger unit. Not sure which way the causal relation goes. The fuse is a good first port of call though. Beyond that, you may wan...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Bypassing the computer that refuses to accept the battery would be a matter of using an off the shelf component to replace it. You could get to the point you'd essentially done a "conversion" on the imiev with all the parts one might use for an ICE conversion except the drive unit. Would it be worth...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I've invested more in "money pit" cars that were only going to cost more money when I was younger (and dumber?). With any luck the savings in fuel pay for the batteries as the prices come down. I've seen figures around the $6K mark for Mitsubishi battery replacements on the internet though, so I'm n...

Re: Brighsun 220Ah cells

Thanks for the detailed advice. I might have to contact some local engineering and metal fabrication outfits, and see what they can do. I was actually thinking of fully flexible cables (as below), but a semi flexible strip sounds more robust, and better performance. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/v0...

Re: Brighsun 220Ah cells

Aluminium links are a bad idea. What would you suggest as optimal? Copper strip? Brass? Steel? Nickel? Are any of these non reactive in contact with the terminals? Or is it going to be necessary to use jointing compound regardless? As I understand it copper is easy to work with but expensive. The t...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

I think it's similar - an ECU gets replaced wholesale. Although the cost of that is from my knowledge under $1000, and in cars I've dealt with you can swap it out by just unplugging it and plugging a new one in. I think there are a lot more ICs and less discrete components in an ice ECU, so repairab...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

I guess I was coming more from a practical than legal standpoint. I honestly would have assumed the local auto electrician might only give me a bemused look if I took it to him., although that is uncharitable of me. I should probably contact one to ask them if do work on EVs in case I need to call o...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

All that might be true, but I'm not sure most people have an accessible alternative. Maybe I'm underestimating the auto electricians in the area and their high voltage work capabilities? I don't blame Mitsubishi for not having a local staff person qualified in this, nor do I blame the local staff fo...

Good to hear it's back on the road! Yes, I've been a bit miffed by the possibility of a $4000 repair bill, but I'll definitely want to get it back on the road. Thinking of my neighbours car troubles puts it in perspective. He bought a low kilometre vehicle that seemed to be all in good conditions, m...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

I think perhaps it's two different wordings for the same part - there are three components involved as far as I know. I'm thinking: Battery Management system (BMS) = Battery ECU Charger/DC-DC converter = DC Converter EV-ECU = motor controller I got an update from the dealer today: 1 month ETA on the...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I'm definitely interested in bumping the capacity of our imiev up slightly when the batteries need replacement. Due to the distance we are from town and living up a mountain we don't have a lot of spare range for our daily commute. An extra 25% capacity would alleviate our "go easy on the heater" da...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

Having had mine assessed by the dealer, $395 in fees for diagnostics and the next step is replacing the EV-ECU ($1400) (and if that doesn't sort it the charger unit is next at $4K+). They are going to do a "dummy order" to get info on the part location and ETA just so I have an idea how long I'm off...
