Re: Troubleshooting an old 24V charger

Eek! I'm glad to know that AEVA still has a webmaster. Sorry, I neglected to say some really important things, that to me are really obvious, so I forget that beginners need to know them. Chargers that connect to the mains contain dangerous voltages, that could lead to death. It's highly advisable ...

Re: Troubleshooting an old 24V charger

Hi Mike, thanks for your reply Yes, the power semiconductors. In your case, the 4 diodes rectifying the AC near the top of your photo... OK, I checked these but am confused by my readings so maybe I'm not doing it right. With the unit plugged in to 240VAC, I used the 500VAC setting on my multimeter ...

Troubleshooting an old 24V charger

Hi all, I have an old 24V charger that died several years ago (no status lights, no charging) and I haven't had the time or the motivation to investigate until recently. So, today I tried taking the lid off to see if I could work out what was wrong. The outside of the charger looks like this: 24V-ch...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

Sigh! Why do businesses think it is such a good ideal to be so secretive? It only makes one think they have something to hide. IMHO, it's your vehicle so any data generated from it also belongs to you. The most they could do is make you sign a non-disclosure agreement on the grounds of protecting co...

Re: PHEV Loss of Km Range with Battery.

Actually, I've just received the invoice for the work today, $13,000 was what I was told that our insurer was quoted. The actual amounts were: Battery Pack Assembly: $9545.45 Labour: $1745.45 GST: $1129.09 Giving a total of $12420.00 I believe from what I know now that a likely alternative fix for t...

Re: PHEV Loss of Km Range with Battery.

Thanks to everybody for your comments and suggestions. As I understand it, the direct engine to wheels mechanical drive only connects above the speed of 120 km/h, a bit too fast! I agree with Johny , the engine-direct-to-wheels kicks in around 70kph if the battery is low enough, or you have either ...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

I understand Mike and it's tricky when they're part-way through the job. I believe evShop can do warranty work on production EVs so it may be worth giving them a call if you get to the point of giving up on Paceway.

Posts to this thread are starting to wander off the original topic which is really now only of historical value anyway IMHO.

I am locking the topic now. @jonescg if you think it's not finished yet and needs unlocking again, please let me know.

Cheers,

Hi John, The topic you originally posted this in ( AVASS Battery Order Details wasn't really the right place for it. Re: PHEV Flood Fail

Today I picked up the cells harvested from our "flooded" PHEV traction battery. Daniel at evShop Perth had broken them down to 32V packs (8 x 4V cells in series in a plastic container + some cell monitoring/balancing? wiring and circuitry on top). Here's one of the packs: phev-32V-pack.png And here ...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

Unfortunately swapping the EV-ECU didn't fix it. Paceway going back to 'technical' for another idea. It seems the standard diagnostic process is to swap bits out until the error goes away. Have you thought of getting another opinion? I've just picked up my old PHEV battery from Daniel at evShop Per...

Hi Andreas, I have been away since I was lucky to get a set of the AVASS cells, now in a week I'm back and have to get real with setting them up. I am interested to hear from any one in Melbourne who got a set of the big cells of what success you have with them, and what BMS you bought or built. Thank...

Re: Aluminium Air battery

If I'm reading that correctly, they're claiming that 1kg of cell, containing 2.5kWh, will propel an EV 700km Perhaps they're talking about a Matchbox EV??? I believe my Outlander PHEV has 12kWh of power and even with its brand new battery, that still only gives me about 50km usable range. Maybe Alum...

Re: PHEV Flood Fail

Finally got our PHEV back from the Mitsubishi Dealer (Rockingham Mitsubishi) yesterday, now with new Traction Battery installed. It's been a long saga. The battery compartment did indeed get water in it, through a drain hole that had lost its plug. The cause of the problem was discovered by an indep...

Re: Battery pack prices plummet

The only way this would not be the case is the conditions of accepting the new battery pack. Yes, and if such a condition involved relinquishing the spare part being replaced, I would expect fair value compensation. During my "negotiations" over the battery, I pointed out more than once that if it ...

Hi Comet, Very interesting, they haven't plummeted here in the West it would appear! The cost was covered by my insurance (under-vehicle accident damage caused the...

I have vowed never to buy another ICE vehicle, but I'm fortunate that my life circumstances enable me to commit to that without too much "inconvenience".

It's now up to the manufacturers to bring something to Oz that will entice me to buy if they want to sell me something.

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

Is it being fixed under warranty? If not, then they can't keep the part, it belongs to you. I had the same battle with Mitsubishi over my old traction battery. Initially they said "No", I replied saying they were infringing my rights under Australian Consumer Law. They then said they had to keep it ...

Hi Richard, Thanks for those interesting replies, Rob. The PHEV certainly is a slug on petrol alone. I would never try towing a caravan with it in hilly country. But for what I use it for, it is fine. I believe that when towing or doing hills, it is important to conserve battery power for extra oomp...

Please be aware that some UPS connect mains neutral to the battery negative so the batteries should be fully enclosed for safety.
Thanks for that info. My system is basically Batteries + 240V charger + inverter so it's not a formal UPS as such.

Cheers,

Charging 2x12V batteries connected in series

Hi, I am looking to repurpose a couple of 100AH 12V AGM batteries as a UPS for our office. I already have a good 24V inverter and a dead 240->24V charger so I need to replace the charger. 240->24V chargers seem to be way more expensive than their 12V counterparts which I am guessing is at least part...

Hi Richard, That information about the drainage plugs was reassuring re water crossing. I also had a minor car park misadventure.
