Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

As long as nothing more was damaged. I have never liked the ridiculously tall standoffs used to transmit power down to the main board. What kind of protection down/up stream did you have? Protection was rated to high to do it's job or the connection is underrated. Probably the latter. That said go o...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

Weber, I just read through the PIP4048 user manual cover to cover and no were did it say not to cut the inductor off the main board with a power saw. Image

so your warranty should be fine.

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

After looking at my two pip4048 inverters side by side today. I am sure cost is playing big part in the design and material choice of the inverter. This new design with the little heat sink for the SCC jammed between the two inverter heatsinks has cost cutting written all over it. I see no other rea...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

I pulled the front cover off my two pip4048 inverters today to familiarize myself with the inductor in question. Way larger than I had imagined. I see perhaps one potentual issue when rewiring it with litz wire that will take up more space. On my 2013 model (with the solar charge controller up top l...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

At $50 for a rewire and teir 1 PV now avalable at 75 cents a watt it's starting to look less atractive.

Though if your running a small battery or multiple pips then it might be worth a shot.

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

Thanks for the pics coulomb. I assume the potting material was used just to mechanically fix it to the board and limit the inductor from resonating to much. I guess I will need to obtain some kind of potting material to achieve the same once it's rewound. I notice the original solid wire has a resin...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

Weber, I have a spare pip that hasn't been installed yet. I am happy to try it on. Thanks for doing all the ground work. I will order the litz wire and update when it arrives.

Thanks

Cost of Servicing iMiEV 2012

Just had another close look at our Imiev and yes it has two flex lines (all be it very short flex lines)

Though the compressor and drive unit is a all in one sealed unit. So over all I think we are in a better position to avoid re gassing than most.

The gas would only need to be replaced if it leaks out. Same as a refrigerator or home Airconditioner this shouldn't need doing and can hold tight for decades. Though the week link in a automotive AC units on a ice car is the rubber flex lines from the compressor to the engine bay hard lines. They a...

Aircon service... what are they doing to it? Sounds like they are inventing reasons to bring the car back and hand over money for nothing. Have you had the annual headlight alignment, Rego plate re torque probably worth checking the floor mats for signs of pilling. The Imiev's Aircon. Other than spr...

I would say any reputable mechanic would be more that capable of inspecting the drivline, brakes, suspension and steering along with any fluid changes needed.

What are they doing for $620? Edit: just what I was thinking Acmotor. at $0.25 kwh that $620 gets you 2480kwh of grid power. One limitation of conventional cruise control is that you set a fixed speed and that all works great on a flat road or even ok going up a hill (if the engine has enough power). Though has little control on a long downhill run as it doesn't apply the brake. (well some fancy modern ICE cars could acti...

I often see ICE cars that are perhaps not very well maintained that have a thick greasy film coating of contaminants from the exhaust covering the rear of the car. Some are so bad that you want to get around them and out of the smoke ASAP. Frogs are a good sign that the local environment is reasonab...

A few of us in Brisbane took note of how ridiculously fast the shipping time was on a inverter that was aparently being shipped from Taiwan to Australia. Though I don't need to distribute it across the world and pay for man hrs building it. The price is competitive considering it's a brand new low volume bike turn key. Though If you on a budget it's not a option. I think $3,500 - $5,000 is a ok budget considering I have the battery's, most of the mec...

Ok cool, thats what I was thinking. I have said it befor that the flywheel effect on a gas motor when you snap that clutch peddle (car) or lever (bike) is very aggressive and in the case of a trials bike in my opinion can launch harder than the instantaneous torque of a electric motor. Think of the ...
