Revenge of the Electric Car

"Don't wait for it to come to a "theatre near you" - you'll be waiting forever." ...unless you're near the AEVA group [in Qld], who's put together a fundraiser film night, showing "Revenge of the Electric Car" (I hope this subtle reminder doesn't reach you too late to go.) PS Maybe a couple of well-...

Making EVs commercially in AU: If not NOW, When?

Woody (& others working up comparisons of particular petrol vs electric cars' multi-year costings): For each EV you assume $5,000 to replace the batteries? I see that as $5,000 you'd/we'd -never- have to pay, eg, in BetterPlace.com's (or any battery-swapping competitor's) business model. I think Aus...

Maybe places like Cuba or - better - Puerto Rico have higher chances of embracing EVs than AU...?

Crushing Old Cars

The lengthy list of tests given above, ie, to determine if cars [worth under $3K] are worthy of conversion to electric... make me wonder if my early-90's SAAB 900i would pass those tests... :-/

(I paid $4K for it, and then well over $2K keeping it in repair over the years since purchase...)

2 More Refineries may Close

That's the news today. It's becoming cheaper to buy refined petrol, etc. from Singapore. Is this -really- due to the prospect of EV's coming en masse (ie, by the 100,000's) to our region? Happy to think that AU's are will be cleaner when these refineries eventually stop working (sorry to think that ...

True... Good point!

"Most people would just chose to plan their trips better, rather than spend big money on additional packs." Making EVs commercially in AU: If not NOW, When?

"What I am interested in is an EV that can do everything that KIA can do and doesn't cost me more than $16,500 new, do you have one in mind?" Since the KIA is likely small, I'd say you've probably built an unlikely challenge. Lots of EV designers -began- with "small" as a goal, if only so the engine...

"The idea of being able to quickly swap battery packs in and out of converted ICE vehicles is, in general, ludicrous" If you -had- to do it, I have no doubts that you could... What do WOMEN want...?

I know, it's an age-old question... that has referred to the bedroom, relationships, etc. Here, I want to know what -women- want in cars. Yep, smaller, cheaper, fuel-economical cars are usually the choice, with some exceptions (eg, folks who live in the country needing to get to distant cities for m...

Well, BetterPlace is smart enough -not- to try to build its own cars; instead, this they -outsource- (first, to French Renault; maybe again, to China, & possibly a 3rd, as well). Applying earnings from their "day-trader" swap stations could cut the cost of cars (ie, if reducing the number of systems...

C Payne's "Revenge of the EV's"

What if... some battery-swap oriented company (like Agassi's BP) offered folks all the technical data sheets they'd need (of both battery & the slot it fits into, when begin swapped-in) to let "work-shoppers" build compatible holes in their (otherwise) unique converted EVs? You could - for a price -...

C Payne's "Revenge of the EV's"

Batteries always get old... even Shai Agassi has mentioned BetterPlace's plans for batteries, that can only hold ~80% of original charge: + offer them - at discount - eg, to students, retired people (BP would still own them, but would presumably offer Km's at discounted cost when you drive-into a sw...

"Anyone who doesn't have at least half-baked plans to buy a battery job ought to be an electrician, or electrical engineer in this forum." This web wiz forum s/w... )runs on Microsoft servers, right?) 'seems a bit slow to save posts. This will only worsen as new EV enthusiasts turn up, join & post. Oh, I forgot to mention... Shai Agassi was included in Chris's doco (second from last, in the "Cast in order of appearance" list), but was not heard even hinting of the need for battery-change-stations... That's OK... We in Oz know about them, so - if we're smart - we'll build 'em here, & be way ahe...

Crushing Old Cars

In AU, I'd say you're right, but in place of extreme population & car density (where you see people wearing masks to filter the air they breathe) - eg, Japan, China, etc. - they won't have much choice. We will, if we're smart enough to take fair advantage of the situation as a -good- thing for EVs. ...

Thalass, As soon as "converting your fav car" to a fast (for you), zero-emitting (for the gov't, to counter the auto-industry's proposal) EV gets legs, the "crush your bomb" won't stand-up. Petroleum-based cars will cost more to drive (that should help convince their owners to convert them); having ...

Making EVs commercially in AU: If not NOW, When?

My current purpose it to encourage some thinking about how to get... + from: "I can do this" (workshop) + to: "-We- can do this" (small to medium size, AU-based EV factories); Perhaps a "community EV factory" model would work here... + they may run like Volvo's small-teams (each ~5 assemblers / team...
